Hara jerdoni and Erethistes pusillus

Post by kdreymann »

I always thought, that Hara hara and Hara jerdoni belong to the same family until I read about Hara hara's correct name is Erethistes pusillus.......
Can anyone clear this for me, please.

Distinguishing between the two genera isn't easy. This depends on the direction of the serrations on the anterior edge of the pectoral spine. They are divergent in Erethistes, and in the same direction in Hara.
I think it was Shane who discovered that the Hara hara of the aquarium trade had divergent serrations and hence, should be an Erethistes.

Oh there is. It's just that no one really know which of the Hara being imported for the aquarium trade is the real H. hara.

Ah - I see :)
Thanks.
But funny, that one species, that differs just in one little part of the skeleton, belongs to a different family.......

Klaus,

No, Hara belongs to the same family (Erethistidae) as Erethistes.
