E. coli effect fish?

Post by L number Banana »

Just mentioned an issue I had in another forum but let me run it by everyone to see if there's something I could have missed.

Last week I put a green bean in the tank for the twigs, they love them but overnight, one glass cats went pale and was flopping on the bottom, others were a tiny bit opaque but acting normally. One glowlight tetra was dead on the bottom and the others had red in the gills and were gasping. No twigs seemed to have touched the bean.

Took the bean out in the morning and did a huge water change, everyone looks fine now, no red gills, glass cats are clear again.

All I could think of was that there was something on the bean?? E. coli, pesticide, herbicide?? Didn't eat the rest of the bag, chucked out the whole thing but noticed that they seemed a bit wet. Smelled normal, no funny colours.

pesticide, herbicide??
That is a possibility...sounds like they were not canned, we always get warned to wash veggies, I know some people that get rashes and such from unwashed fruits and veggies, your little fish in a contained area may have been much more sensitive.

I'd agree with Birger, probably something -cide. E. coli aren't that unusual in rivers and waters, and fish tend to live in those rivers and waters too - so I expect they are more tolerant than humans for example.

Do they ever add chlorine or chloramines to your water? Another thing can be run-off, if you have well water. Just thinking out loud.

Yes, they add chloramine but I use Prime and make sure the temp is correct. Maybe it has something to do with the heatwave and they're adding more of something to the water supply - worth calling about tomorrow. The water I added today was from the rain barrel.
It's so hot here I had to pop the water in the fridge for a while to cool it to 26c!!

Heat wave supper: Ice cream and beer.

And the rest of the fish are still doing well. Temp is stable with air conditioning on in the house. Fan is going in the room with the cool water tanks.

I concur with Birger (and I rhyme!). Sounds like some sort of poisoning from pesticides.

BTW, E. coli AFFECTS everything. It is as ubiquitous as a species can be.
