Someone questioned if this fish was a brevispinis or a cyclurus.

I dont' care which one I have... just want a correct ID. Opinions? It's the best shot I could get...

Have you read this thread http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... hp?t=26141 ? It should help you ID your fish - if you are still unsure pay particular attention to the shape of the til & whether it is solid in colour or has a lighter bar at the edge.

actually i'll take a safe bet that this is a real cyclurus

BUT

to be sure, PLEASE take another sharp pic where we can see FINS. whole ones, that is.
any fins will do, but the tailfin is best.

If you can't get a good picture, I'll try.

They were purchased as cyclurus, but then I was told no, brevispinnis, then no, cyclurus and I quit trying to figure it out ;).

hey, it's not that easy, unless you have 2" fish or larger and a picture of the whole fish

ofcourse the easiest way is to raise them......if they get larger than 2-2.5" TL they're most definitely cyclurus, cause brevispinis doesn't reach that size

I spawned them Sid. The adults are 2" or so TL.

what is the shape of the tailfin?

if it's edged; cyclurus, if it's rounded brevispinis

also; clear efges on all fins; cyclurus; no clear edges on all fins; brevispinis

I have some of Barbie's Lophiobagrus fry (they're all doing well, Barbie), and I also have some old Lophiobagrus cyclurus. I don't think Barbie's fish are L. cyclurus.

The sad part here is that these fish are still in a bottom tank on my rack, in the tank I qt'd them in ;). It's most inconvenient to even see into the dang thing, so I've been putting off trying to take pictures. I'll work on that when I shuffle fish around in the next week or so ;).
