My Pleco Obsession Continues...

Post by ahodge84 »

In addition to the BNs that I picked up today, I also got another type of pleco at another store. As some of you might recall, my interest in pleco species began when I purchased an L-201 a couple of weeks back. Well, I decided to add a clown today:

While I was at it, I also sprung for 4 more banjo cats. I love them and rarely see 'em around here. Besides, I thought that less than $2.50 per was a solid deal :headbang:

I didn't get pictures of them, but earlier in the day I also got 3 more SA bumblebees. Like the banjos, I can't resist when I see them. Needless to say, I won't be getting any honeycomb tatia now...

The bumblebees have been tough to photograph. Here is what little I have. I am always trying to get some good shots, but the bumblebees, when visible, seem to be always on the move.

Here's one resting near my 201:

From the pair that I introduced before yesterday's trio:

A little fuzzy, but you can see one bumblebee wedged between the heater and tank wall, on top of each suction cup:

I'll work on getting more.

LOL, just need to butter them up (get them fat) and they slow down a little. Atleast then you have a bigger target to photograph lol. Yeah, I agree that yours is a like mine, they almost look like they could be family members!

Oh, BTW, love your comment on not getting the and now we are both getting them lol.

They should be fattening up pretty quick. They usually go nuts at feeding time- I've seen the tiny buggers lug huge pieces of a spirulina disc around the tank, lol.

And, uh, yeah. That was quite a turnaround on my oil cat comment, eh? But that is usually how it goes. Just when I give up on something... BAM, there it is.

So, I stopped by a LFS today to pick up a new filter system for my 55 and naturally I had to check out their stock of fish. I was quite happy with it and wish I had more/bigger tanks. They had a gold nugget, some blue rams, SA bumblebees, banjo cats, limas, and a ton of other good-looking fish. Anyway, I ended up walking out with these two fellas. I loved the clown that I picked up a couple of days ago so much that I decided to get another. The other, of course, is a hillstream loach. It's in the 37 right now, but will move to the 55 shortly.

Thanks again! The clown was a no-brainer, but the hillstream doesn't fit. But I couldn't pass on such a sweet fish that should do fine in my other tank, especially. And me neither! But it looks like they will be arriving while I am in class / my office hours from 11a to 2p. I may just have to cut the office hours short. Nobody really takes advantage of my being there anyway to ask for help :screwy:

I'm finishing up my Master's in early American history, focusing on the West, Native Americans, and disease. Really uplifting stuff

I will finish up in May, then find a job for the summer, until it's time to move. Where to, I am not sure of yet. I have PhD applications pending at the U of Nebraska, the U of Montana, and the U of Oregon. I got into the U of Kansas and Montana State, the latter with funding. I expect to hear from Oklahoma State any day now. That's been my frontrunner all along.

Well we would have loved to have you here (although that is not where I go to school lol) Wisconsin is a great place, cold winters, hot summers, plenty of lakes and crazy people from Illinois coming up and catching all of our smallmouth bass :x

Where i would fish growing up we would catch 50-100 small mouth bass in a matter of 3-4 hours (sizes being from 15-24")... now if you go out for 3-4 hours your lucky to catch 3-4 fish being 6-16". Its bad, wish the DNR would regulate better (have seen people taking 30+ fish when the daily limit was 4)

Anyways, Good luck with everything and cannot wait to see more pictures taken.

Beautiful fish you have  Remember that clowns are small panaques and need a lot of wood in their diet to stay healthy.

Thanks! I currently have one piece of driftwood in the tank and a couple of smaller-sized pieces soaking. At least one of those will go in with these guys. Unfortunately, one of my clowns died overnight. I have to admit that he acted a bit strange from the day that I got him, but I was surprised to see him dead this morning. My suspicion is that he was not healthy because of a lack of wood in his diet, at least before I got him. The LFS that I got him from had no wood in their tank at all. That's my best guess as to the cause. Fortunately, I just got him a few days ago so I can get a new one. It still sucks.

nvcichlids, sorry to hear about overfishing in your area. It certaintly takes the fun out of it for those who do follow the rules. I've never been big into bass fishing, but have done a fair amount of flyfishing for trout in PA and MT. In both cases, from my experience, wildlife/fish authorities are fairly active.

I would definitely be interested in taking here, if you were looking to move her. Like you mentioned, the transport is the only problem. If we could find a reasonable means of doing so, I would gladly cover the cost.

Glad to hear that your c. perugiaes are doing very well. Well worth the wait, right? :foggie:

Actually, I just received an excellent teaching assistantship and fellowship position from Nebraska-Lincoln, which as you might know is one of the top Plains Indian schools in the nation. As soon as I get the formal paperwork, I plan on committing to UN-L.
