Pimelodus pictus maxes out at about 4.5 inches. The 9-inch report comes from its confusion with P. blochii, a much larger species.
Try to get more than two, if possible. They are really most comfortable in a small group of three or more.

Didnt i already answer this post on aquaria central's forum?? Oh well anyways, I think as with most schooling fish you should keep as many as you can, I'd recommend atleast four fish, however i dont believe your tank is big enough for the pictus, the size isnt as much of a concern as the activitie is. They are very active fish and i have been told and came to the conclusion from personal experience that they should be kept in tanks that are atleast four feet long.
55 gallon
11 pygmy cories
8 neon tetras
1 banjo
4 black neons
