Acrylic Tank Rehab Advice?

Post by jen.nelson »

I just won a used acrylic tank on eBay. It was cheap because it has coralline algae that's grown all over it. My guess (I pick it up tomorrow) is that it is also scratched from the previous owner trying to get said algae off of it.

I'm looking for advice on how best to (1) remove the coralline algae and (2) how to rehab the scratches.

My thought was to soak the algae in vinegar or other acid (how strong of an acid I can use w/o damaging the acrylic?) and use some sort of buffing compound (I assume they make these for acrylic specifically?) and a random orbital buffer to get rid of the scratches.

Your input, as always, is appreciated.

Jen
