How many families?

Post by Silurus »

I'm sure that many of you have never thought of this, but how many different families of catfish have you kept/are keeping?

In my case, I am keeping/have kept representatives from every family (using the Cat-eLog as a guide) except for the following:

Anchariidae
Ariidae
Astroblepidae
Cranoglanididae
Diplomystidae
Nematogenyidae
Plotosidae
Scoloplacidae

Not too bad, considering that (except for ariids and plotosids) these are not fish you would typically encounter in the trade.

HH,
The question I have since they are not on the list, is have you kept (or do you keep) any Hypsidoridae?

:?:

I am certain the care would be much easier than the rest of the fish on your list! Just set them on a shelf, no waterchanges required! :D :!:

You didn't say extant families!
Sincerely,
Paul E. Turley

Paul,

I thought it would be pretty obvious I was talking about extant families. Otherwise, I would have added Andinichthyidae in addition to Hypsidoridae to the list.

FWIW, I do have a fossil hypsidorid sitting on my table at home.

Right now:
Akysidae
Amphiliidae
Asprenididae
callichthyidae
Claroteidae
Loricariidae
Mochokidae
Pimelodidae

and I have kept as well:
Auchenipteridae
Bagridae
Doradidae
Erethistidae
Hepapteridae
Ictaluridae
Pangasiidae
Pseudopimelodidae
Schilbeidae
Siluridae
Sisoridae
Trichomycteridae

Chaca is still on my "things to do" list, as well as the beautiful Liobagrus from Japan, more Trichomycterids (non-parasitic ones of course; I've had the other kinds too, and they're really not suited), and I would really like a dwarf Clarias species like Xenoclarias eupogon (unfortunately that one's likely extinct) or a similar 6-8" species.

How about Austroglanididae? (Not in Catelog.)

I feel like a total outcast here. But I'm going to step out on a piece of mushy driftwood. I've only had fish tanks for 2 years! Better late than never. I would imagine many folks here have had fish their entire lives.

Callichtydae
Loricariidae

Miles to go. So much to learn.

Heptapteridae
Ictaluridae
Loricariidae
Callichthyidae

I have only kept catfish from these four families, split on 9 genera and 21 species.

Breeding only from two genera and four species. But more to add soon, I hope!

At present my five tanks houses cats from 3 families, 6 genera and 11 species.

bronzefry, don't feel bad...this is my third year and you've had as many families as me:

Callichthyidae (C. aeneus albino, C. ambiacus, C. julii)
Loricariidae (Otocinclus spp.)

Limited to C. aeneus albino at present; will get more species when I move to somewhere where I can have legitimate tank space!

Suprisingly ended up with a longer list than I thought originally.
Have kept:
Siluridae
Schilbeidae
Pangasiidae
Callichthyidae
Pimelodidae
Doradidae
Asprenididae

Currently "trying" to stick to Mochokidae
but like to keep one species of Loricariidae on the go
For the future certain Bagridae look interesting...so many fish so little time(and tank space).
34 years of fishkeeping

I would imagine to amass the long lists of genera takes a lot of time, study and travel. It must be a way of life!
