Sexing Zebras

Post by AndrewC »

There is five fish used in the pictures, the group pictures did not turn out well.
Apart from one fish which i bought and is a bit older, the fish are all around four or five years old, grown on from fry.
I think there is one female in the group, but looking at the group in the tub it looked like two, though it could be a fat male!
My thoughts are:

Female

Male

Male?

Female?

Male (Left) / Female (Right)

Male? (Top) / Male (Bottom)

Sorry, edited the first post to help show the fish better and also added what sex i think the fish are.
Some pictures show the same fish, i took the pictures with my phone and over half of them were too poor to use.

I think you have 4 males and 1 female then.

L46 are difficult to sex; you can look at the same fish 3 times and second-guess yourself every single time. Males are always easier to spot; but sometimes the sexual dimorphism between the two sexes can overlap. Behavior within the aquarium is usually an easier indicator, IMO.

First one is a definite female; in the last 3 pictures I could potentially see 2 females [the one from the first picture and in the last picture, the bottom specimen].

I think the headshapes are quite obvious on these. I think the fish in the last picture bottom is just in a strange angle because his head is up the corner of the bowl. It's the same fish as in picture 3 I'd say and that is not likely to be a female there.
