S. Robertsi

Post by Graeme »

At my Local fish store i 'm pretty sure there are about 6 S.Robertis or maybe S.Schoutedeni. The price is only £2.95 each! I was talking to one of the sale's people and he say's that's the price for dwarf Syno's? Is it a good price for this Syno?

Thanks.
Graeme.

If they are indeed S. robertsi, that is a very, very good price.
If they are S. schoutedeni, somewhat on the cheap side (they're only a wee bit more expensive in the US), but nothing to shout about.

Also check the picture of S. soloni in the Cat-eLog to see if they're that. Silurus told me the photo of robertsi in Axelrod's Atlas is actually soloni, which explains a lot.

That's definitely not S. robertsi. Too young at this stage to tell, but it looks very much like S. eupterus, I'm afraid.

Thanks.

I guess it depends on the individual temperament of the fish. I had a singleton in a 45 gallon that was extremely well-behaved towards tankmates.

I was thinking with him being just a baby he will grow with others around him and not act aggresive to them. Like you say's HH maybe older one's will act more edgy with the moves around tanks and young one's will settle.

As Synos go, S. eupterus is a fairly peaceful fish. At least mine have been. Their large adult size is a bigger issue.

I could be wrong, but I think it's a koensis, which is what my two 'robertsi' seem to be.

I'm confused. Which/whose fish does your "it" refer to?

The one in Graeme's picture (although the link's not working right now). It looks very similar to S. koensis as seen in the Cat-eLog and in Sands's guide to Asian and African cats. I bought two of them, sold as S. robertsi.

The fish in the Cat-eLog and the Sands book are not the same species, and both are not S. koensis either. The fish in the Sands book is most probably S. tourei, which contrary what Sands says, is distinct from S. koensis. The fish in the Cat-eLog is difficult to identify, but I must say that except for slight variation in the color pattern, it looks strikingly like the drawing of the lectotype of S. schoutedeni in Poll.

The tourei in the Cat-eLog doesn't look much like the so-called koensis in Sands's book, though.

I have an alleged shoutedeni which looks much more like the S.greshoffi in the Cat-eLog. However, that doesn't match the photo of gresshoffi in Sands's book either.

The tourei in the Cat-eLog comes from the Aqualog Photo Atlas, which is wrong as usual. I'm not too sure what the Aqualog tourei actually is.

The greshoffi in the Sands book is correctly identified. The one in the Aqualog Photo Atlas used in the Cat-eLog isn't. It's S. afrofischeri. The pic of S. afrofischeri in Aqualog and the Cat-eLog is actually an emaciated S. batesii. My, what a tangled web we weave. Jools, you getting all this?
Anyways, do you have a pic of the greshoffi/schoutedeni and the koensis/tourei?

Sorry, no pics because I don't have a digital camera. I think I'll just take the critters at face value; I've had them way long enough not to worry about any special requirements.
