ID this Peckoltia?

Post by Fish Demon »

I found this little guy at the LFS, a contaminate in a shipment of clown plecos (obviously he is not a clown pleco). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can give me a positive ID on him. None of the ones in the Cat-eLog really look like him, but he is very young (about 1" long). I took the pictures before I introduced him to the tank, so he is very stressed out. Once settled in, his markings are significantly brighter and more distinct, and the stripes are more of an orange color.

Here are the photos:

Q: How tall is Cartman in real life?

A: Well, Cartman doesn't exist in real life, but if he did he'd be two feet tall.

Hi!

Can you make a pic of the mouth and more precisely of the teeth, something tells me it is not a Peckoltia but more likely to be a small Panaque species...

I suppose that your shipment was coming from Colombia???

Cheers

I don't think I'm going to be able to catch him again (at least not until he puts on a couple of inches), as my tank is heavily planted and has lots of driftwood. Or maybe once he settles in completely he won't be too shy. He has colored up a lot since I took those pictures, I wish I could get a photo of him now! :)

Some of his features, particularly the eyes, reminded me of a Panaque species. Are the two genera closely related?

I don't know where the shipment came from, but I can ask tomorrow (I work at the store).

Hi!

Yes the species form the Panaque dentex species group and Peckoltia are sharing several external features...

Your fish has a head shape especially in the snout region near the mouth that makes me believe it is a Panaque....

Any chance you could describe how the teeth are???

I'm no good at ID'ng plecos, but I'm curious - why is it obviously not a clown pleco (Panaque maccus)?

Mike if you look at pics of panaque maccus, you will see that p.maccus has more complex and thiner stripes on his head...
while the stripes on this panaque(or peckoltia?) is not so complex and they are thick...
hope i have helpd you out!

Hi!

If the teeth are more Peckoltia like it could well turn out to be L103 ... also very close is L243 "Ancistomus" sp...
If the teeth are more Panaque like, it must be a species highly related to the Panaque sp L169-L74-LDA1...

I can't get any pictures of his mouth, as it doesn't seem he likes to suck on the glass a lot.

I did get some pictures of his body, but they are pretty crappy. It was dark where he was sitting so I couldn't get the camera to focus on him.

Heh... I never really noticed his weight.

He could very well be a bit skinny, though; he was the smallest plec in the tank probably wasn't getting enough to eat.

Hi!

The colouration is really like the one of the Panaque dentex species group, very similar to L74/169LDA1...

That is a very close match, especially with the body.

The markings on the head, however, are different. Could that just be an age-related thing?

Hi!

Yes it can be age related...

Still L74 is coming from the Rio do Para
L169 coming from the middle of the Rio Negro
LDA01 is being imported from Manaus...

I don't know if your fish can be L169 or LDA01 depending on its catching place but he is surely very close to them, the range of this/these species is not quite known but it must be rather wide spread through the Guyana shield...

Cheers
