So the local fish store has a weird fish I'm hoping someone can help me with. Yes, I could go back and ask them, and plan to, but in the meantime my curiosity is burning and I thought the experts on here might be able to help.
The store had this thing labelled as a "Broch-something-er-other Synodontis"... I wrote the super-long word down and brought it home, but Google returned nothing (and now I lost the piece of paper I'd written down on). It didn't look anything like any of the catifsh on this site that have "Brach-" in the name.
No pic, but here's a rough description:
Black, no markings, about 7 inches long, tapered body narrowed toward the tail whiplike tailfin, VERY tiny eyes, narrowly spaced atop the head - almost looks more like a fishy-shaped insect or crustacean than a true fish. More primitive looking than most catfish, if that's possible ... looked like a intermediate between catfish and some kind of fossil. Long, tapered, back-swept ventral fins. I don't recall the barbels well. It sat on the bottom of tank unmoving - the second time I saw it it seemed to be sucked onto the glass at the rear of the tank, but may have been just resting against it ... perhaps it's some kind of pleco or something?
Any guesses? I'll post the answer when I get to the bottom of it if my crappy description doesn't yield the beast's name. Correct guesser wins the undying admiration of all past, present, and future Planet Catfish forum users.
