My Experience spawning Scobinancistrus Raoni(L82)

Post by Luckyloot »

I will start by saying this is the second pleco I have spawned, the only other being l183s. I got the original group of 5 in February of this year. Drove over 2 hours up north to Birmingham UK. I decided it was worth it as it looked like such a cool species and I only breed things that look cool. After getting them and properly researching habitat I discovered that they are endangered making this wild group even more special.

Over the next few months I fed Dr Bassleer. I spoke to Leandro Sousa who suggested I try earth worms as his loved them, mine did not touch them.

In this time I was looking for larger specimens as mine were all about 12-13cm(about 5 inches in freedom units😂)
Exactly 2 weeks ago today I managed to find 2 for sale in Leeds and decided my dad and I would make the 4 hour car drive up. It whoever turned into a round trip of over 12 hours after constant standstill traffic.(sorry if this is boring but I am trying to show the lengths I went to get these!!)

I got them home and they settled in immediately, both taking over 2 caves. One is definitely a male the other I am still unsure about.
The week before getting them I had beeing doing daily water changes with ro water(about 5-10%) after speaking to some breeders in Germany. I also started feeding a snail formula by Futterdose which they seemed to enjoy.

A week after I had added the 2 new specimens in the tank, about 16-17cm(6.5 inches) I noticed 2 pairs trapping. I could not believe it. 1 week and they were already trapping! After a day of trapping in checked the cave with a torch and found no eggs sadly. I was not surprised. A couple days go by and I saw another pair trapping for 2 days. Again nothing. Then on Wednesday the 12th of June, I saw a pair trapping again. I decided to leave them. I checked on Thursday and guess what I saw!

EGGS!

I was so excited as less than 3 months ago I had started dreaming about setting up their tank and now I had a spawn.

I decided to leave the eggs with the male to give him a bit of experience.

On Sunday the 15th of June I decided to remove the eggs and place them in a ziss tumbler as I wanted to watch them develop.

And that is where we are up to today. I will attach some photos i took of the eggs and try upload the video of the male on eggs.

Hope you enjoy and please ask any questions as I will be happy to answer them. Any suggestions as well will be great thanks.

I will produce a breeding report after 3-4 more spawns so I can make sure what triggered them to spawn.

Thanks for reading,
Luke T
