There's no such animal as far as I know, anyway C. barbatus males are pretty much black in base colour, especially in the front half of the body and head.

I don' think they are anything other than old fish, the top picture of the two is definately an old fish and quite honestly the other picture is not good enough to tell much from.

I am afraid the Cory aqualog has a mountain of errors in it and the publishers knew about them but still went to print.

I would only use it as a rough guide and not as an id bible. That will come next year 8)

Hello

It seems that it exists some melanic specimens of barbatus in the wild but I didn't see one yet .

I suspect the name is an inacurate translation of the japanese variety name C barbatus 'thunder'. Which in fact is not C barbatus at all but a cultivated colour variation of C kronei which has a zigzag black line or "lightening strike" pattern along the hind body instead of a straight black line.

C kronei is a striking enough fish as is, but with the "lightning strike" pattern is quite remarkable,,, so is the price !!! Like the Koi carp in Japan, the more spectacular the colour pattern the more sepctacular the price. The more striking the pattern on C barbatus Thunder, the more striking the price.

Strike me! what a description.
