Hagen/Fluval recommended vegetable oil for lubricating the o-rings on their filters when I contacted their customer service a few years ago.

Hi all,
Silicon grease. A little pot from a plumbing supply place will last for ever.

cheers Darrel

Silicone grease is preferred, as petroleum based lubes (Vaseline) can and will degrade rubber over time.

I not sure what all aquarium o-ring's are made of, though. I remember my first Marineland Magnum coming with a small jar/tube of silicone. (My subsequent 12 Magnums I acquired used as trade-ins!)

I submitted this question at Marineland.

Thank you all very much for your replies, I think I will try vegetable oil first.

For a follow up, here is the answer I got from Marineland.
We recommend a silicone based (never petroleum based) lubricant. You may be able to find some locally at a hardware/home improvement store. Ideally, we recommend using a food grade silicone lubricant which can be found at restaurant supply stores and online.
