The catfish tries to swim with the Dempsey all the time. Even in the light. I'm not sure if the Dempsey likes it. But she tolerates it

You have done something that has always escaped me. You got one sun cat swimming in the open in the light and not hiding. I have approx. ten of them, most around 10"+ in a 1500 gal pond but I almost never see them.

When I had them in tanks, they hid too.

From what Victor wrote - assuming it is the same species - they are not found of light, but the need to chool is stronger

Yes, they are the same species, Horabagrus brachysoma, one of the most common aquarium catfish sold in the US.
