L066?

Post by edkin »

I was sold this as a L066, but doesn't look like the L066s I have. Could anyone confirm? Thanks.

Looks very probable to me. These nicely colored ones pop up from time to time in aquarium fry but are pretty rare.

I will say more like a L400 variant than L66.
I've seen some spectacular L400, looking like that one.

Beautiful specimen.
I will definitely make it part of my collection|

Is it tankbred or wild? Did you get more than just that one fish, and if so, do the others look like L066?

Excactly. Among 100 offspring you might find one of these :) So, this could well be L066 - it's pattern doesn't mean it's NOT L066. All the Xingu-based Hypancistrus forms seem to be able to produce some offspring with markings that separate them from the norm.

Hi,
great looking Hypancistrus. Body shape is like L 66, L 287 and other Hypancistrus without L-numbers. I have bread a pair of similar fish. I call them Hypancistrus sp. "Last Emperor".

The result:

Nice looking fry, but among 100 -NO-similar looking fish. That means: This kind of pattern is not inherited to the next generation. If the parents are L66 or something else is unclear and not verifiable.

Perhaps the probability for this kind of pattern is higher among the fry. In my theory this kind of pattern is a rare variation, and perhaps the probability could be increased by selective breeding. It is also a fact that, most of the groups of L66 won't "produce" such markings, even if you get 1000 youngsters. So the question is how to deal with this kind of fish? Selecting them to start an artificial breeding programm?

The result could be like this L 236 (selected breeding over 3 Generations)

I bought this online from a specialist seller in Taiwan. The seller said it was wild and "one only".

Not to be a pessimist but this could be just to bump up the price...

Possibly...although for me, it was paying for the nice markings on this specimen rather than its provenance.
