BN breeding advise

Post by Sweety »

I've got 2 common BN(M&F) which I would like to have a go at breeding. I know they need a cave but was wondering what size would be best for them & if the cave had to have a solid bottom or if a gravel bottom would be ok if I used 1/2 a plant pot which i've used for Kribs in the past. The female is fully grown at around 4" total length but she's about 8 years old so not sure if she is to old now :- the male is around 3" & about a year & half. I would be greatful for any advice
Cheers

The cave should be quite tight around the fish - around 30-40mm/1.25-1.5" diameter/diagonal, and about 100mm/4" long (or deep if you prefer).

If the fish are quite small, you may find that they need an even smaller cave than the dimensions above.

I have also successfully bred them under a upside down terracotta saucer (the ones you have under plant-pots) - just cut a piece off from the edge to make an entrance.

My BN used to love a small ceramic log. Then I got a ceramic "envelope" type cave made for plecos and they liked that even better.
Seems like if they have a tube shaped cave, they'll be satisfied.

Thanks for the replies looks as if it's going to be a bit trial & error to she what they like so will try the 1/2 plant pot for a bit & if nothing i'll try what some of you are using

I suspect half a plantpot will be OK to hide under, but the male probably won't breed there - too open.

I was thinking that so have put some stones at the entrance to make it smaller, at the min he's up side down on his favourite bit of wood & taking no notice of the cave
