Dear forum, How long are the periods between breeding with hypancictrus sp. like L46, L66.
I mean, if they finished after a few times breeding, there is a longer period of rest. How long is this?
six months? a year? What is the best way to trigger spawning again, to set in a new breeding period.
reason that i ask , is because al breeding is stopped for eight months now. Bit frustrating. i love to have litle critters in my tanks!

Re: time between breeding periods
Time between breeding for pairs of hypancistrus is really random.
I have a pair of L46 that can breed for two or three months, and then not breed for six months, even up to a year.
Hypancistrus tend to have spurts of breeding and then a rest period inbetween breeding which is a random period of time, and i have noticed this with different hypancistrus that has bred in my tanks.
Sometimes i have found the breeding female beaten up a little bit during these periods, probably the male frustrated with the females lack of interest in breeding.
Breeding groups with two breeding females in the group, can breed a bit more regularly because the two females are breeding rather than just one female.
I do not try to trigger them to spawn, but leave them to it, and use the periods inbetween breeding to feed them up, as i think breeding takes a lot out of them.
