Pygmy Cory

Post by Bill »

Hi,

I have 5 Pygmy Cory's in a 10g planted tank, every now and then one of them will shoot up to the surface real fast then go right back down.

Is this normal, are they looking for food or are they getting air?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

Do you know why they do this?

the reson they do this relates back to their natural habitat in the wild.. they live in a rainy/dry season schedule.. where in the sry season water drys up and the water conditions are not so well.. when the water becomes like this they rush to the air and gulp in the fresh air as the water may not be so well oxyginated.. or something along that line. just another way of the cory's to get air into their system. correct me if i am wrong...

Corys are gut breathers (meaning they can utilize atmospheric oxygen through their intestines) and they will periodically come up for air in this manner.
