Rineloricaria beni?

Post by after »

Image

Not the greatest pic, but the best I can get, he isn't out and about a lot. He was just sold to me as a 'Whiptail Catfish'. I have a look in the cat-elog pages and thought that Rineloricaria beni looked the closest, just wanted to get a second opinion.

Thanks

No idea what it is (at least nothing closer than that it's most likely a Rhineloricaria), but unless the shape of the fish is distorted this is not R. beni. Too flat and too elongated.

By what identification point(s) are you identifying it as R. beni? I'm asking this, because in my experience, fish from Bolivia, including Rio Beni is not commonly exported - in fact, this is the ONLY species to have any keepers, and given the difficulty in identifying Rineloricaria, I'm not at all sure all the keepers that claim to have this species actually are correct.

Hi all,

MatsP, I was just solely looking at the pics in the Cat-eLog, and thought that R. beni looked the closest, but having a look closer at Rineloricaria lanceolata it does look more like that.

I can't find any descriptions of other points to identify them by, so was just going off pictures. Quite hard that way though!

I am very very new to the fish keeping world, but I am interested in identifying what I have correctly.

I will try and get some more photos of it next time it shows itself!

Thanks

They could even be L-10a's showing stress color. Just a guess.

I just searched for what a L 10a was... and found it called a red lizard or a red whiptail.

When I got that one, the guy in the shop said I could have that browny colour or I could get a red one which was dearer. I liked that one anyway so got him... So maybe.

Next time I go back in the shop I might ask them what they have as a name for it. They dont always put their proper names there usually only the common ones.

Nope. At least not a true red lizzard. It could be one of the L10a x R. lanceolata hybrids. They are fairly widespread.
