Sick Zebra, Very confused!!

Post by doctorzeb »

Hi, there again

Sooner or later, my overjoyous posts had to tun to something other that zebra fry.

I noticed this this morning.

I remember just before the other female started spawning, there had been some bickering, and she got some damege to her left pectorial fin. So I put in a little myxazin to make sure.

It seemed to get better.

It actually looks like hairs, as opposed to fungus or dare I say it finrot. I have applied some muxazin with a cotton but as I am nervous about putting it directly in the tank due to the fry. Her eyes, (i think it's a her), also seem to be a little sunken that is really worrying me.

Has anyone got any ideas. Also I've never really know females to fight, is this associated with breeding.

cheers everyone.

very worried......rob

I'd definitely pull her out of that tank and quarantine her for treatment. That definitely looks like a fungal infection. I've had good luck swabbing the site with iodine, but you also need to treat her with a good broad spectrum antibiotic in case of secondary infection from the wound site, in my experience.

I'd recommend moving water from her tank, and some filter media, if at all possible.

I I think that may be the best bet, I'll set up another tank and give her a good treamnet of Myxazin. Have you ever seen anything like this before. Any idea if it could spread to other fish.

I am wondering If I might be just as well putting the fry in another tank and treating all the zebras.

Thanks again.

cheers

Mine got something like that after I added a few oto's to my aquarium. I raised the temp to the upper 80's and added melafix. It worked, but the fins never really grew back. Have you added any new fish to your aquarium?

think he means the otos may have carried the neccesary bug to cause the problem, not that they'd actually done the physical damage... but a small tussle can leave a very inviting home for a whole host of nasties. but that's clayton, not the good Dr.

In my experience with zebras its either they are sick and dead or healthy as a horse, its better to just move the sick fish if there is no signs of contamination in the tank, why subject the healthy fish with medication, I have no prior experience with sick zebra but from the looks of that picture she has wounds on each tip of the fins could this be a territorial despute, who will own the cave or who will spawn fist maybe the cave surface is just too rough or too small maybe raising the temp might work and some salt maybe methylene blue, don't take my word for it I have never medicated my zebras before.

Cheers Guys,

Im pretty sure it all started with the two females bickering. I have also noticed the female that spawn has a slight nick out of ther dorsal fin....HHHHHMMMMM.

A sfar as adding any new fish to the tank, just the dominant male zebra, who seems to stay over his side of the tank.

I've removed the fry, upped the temp to 84, applied myxazin directly to the wound and applied a dose to the tank....just in case.

I still can't figure out if it is fungus or hair. I had a wwee "pull" at it when i was treating her and it's pretty solid.

clayt101. How long did it take for your fins (well your zebs), to start improving.

oh well, I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

thanks again everyone.

Yes, I meant that the oto's may have brought it in. As far as the infected part of the fins, they eventually fell off. They grew back after a while, but were never as full as before. They were totally healthy though. I don't have them anymore, so I don't know if they totally grew back or not.

Cheers ClayT101

You've put my mind at rest a bit. Much appreciated.
I guess I will just have to sit and wait. I'll continue to treat the tank with myxazin, and as for they fry, will it's luvin it, a big tank to itself!

cheers and thanks again
