tanksize for L134s

Post by SteveC »

Hello yall

I am doing research on L134s and I am a little confused on the tank size for L134s.

According to their cat-e-log page, I am suppose to give a 12/12 for each fish. But it seems that a lot of people keep them in in spacious environments (I have seen 9 adults in a 20 long, and someone had 11 in a 22 long--36/12/12).

I am thinking of getting a colony of 6, what would you guys recommend in tank size.

Thank you in advance.

A 12" x 12" (one square foot, sq.ft.) base area for each fish seems about right, at least if you want to breed them. So a trio in a 36 x 12 x 12 would be about right. The examples you give appear, to me, quite cramped.

A colony of 6 may be housed in, say, a 48" x 18" base (4ft x 1.5 ft = 6 sq.ft.), perhaps? The height of the tank isn't critical here - taller tank gives more volume of water to dilute the biological waste, but it's not really critical for the purpose of keeping the fish happy as such.

In my opinion, "bigger is better" when it comes to fish housing.

I have a group of five adults in a heavily decorated 24x15tank and it's a lot of work. I will be moving them to larger quarters.

I use 12 X 12 X 30 inch 20 longs for my group of 5 breeding L134. I see no reason why six breeders wouldn't do as well.
That leaves enough room for a couple of broods to remain in their breeding tank a couple months to get some size to them before I remove them to make way for newer broods.
Mine only spawn from about March 1st to Sept 1 over two seasons.
