I frequent this site almost daily to read and learn what I can. From that I have learned I have lucipinnis and not petricola based on the patterning of the spots, lol. I don't post to much but like I said read all I can. Well to the point.
Well I ended up getting another 75gallon for free, it will clean up nice, couldn't pass it up. Right now I have a 30gallon cube with 8 cichlids and 13 lucipinnis in it. Of the 13 only 7 are of spawning size. I have a AquaClear 110 filter on it with air pump and do 50% weekly water changes. The plan is to get the 75 cycled out and running then switching everything out of the 30 and into the 75gallon. However, last night just before lights out I was giving the tank a good look over before bed. I was completely shocked to see what appeared to a gravid female being aggressively pursued by a male. She turned slightly to her side, more or less, sprayed eggs out scattering them amongst the bottom of the tank(gravel bottom). The downside was they were quickly eaten by any fish that could suck one in. I am pretty sure this is not the first time because this particlar female has appeared gravid for about 3 or 4 weeks. I want to know if I continue with the switch over of tanks, will it mess them up to much so that they quit this behavior. My personal reasoning says "no" because bigger tank=more room, more water=happier fish. I would love to grow some of these cats out maybe make a few bucks and some trades at the lfs. But more than that, would be to say I did it. Would adding more cichlids into the 75 mess up the cats breeding attempts?
Looking for some advice from people with a broad knowledge base on this type of stuff and hopefully point me in the right direction.
Also, when setting up the 75gallon I would like to set up the the "caved" container with marbels on the bottom and suction pulling the eggs up to a mesh breeder to hold them there until they grow out a little bit or put into a different tank. A link to or something on how to set this contraption up sure would be helpful if anyone knows lol. I have seen different versions of basiclly the same thing. ANY advice really would help me. Thanks very much in advance.
Thanks, Bryant

Caution is a most valuable asset in fish keeping, especially if you are the fish.

Re: lucipinnis?spawning
Once everything is switched over and you do manage to have them spawn you will need someplace to rear the young....so what I would suggest is to retain the 30 leave the adult lucipinnis in it, set up a marble trap, hopefully they spawn, and raise the young in the 30, you can then transfer on the adult lucipinnis into the 75.
You could continue using the marble trap in the 75 if you wish to raise even more but I would say concentrate on the first spawn and go from there.
I do not know if you could have both tanks setup but otherwise it would be difficult to raise the young.
