Has anyone information on spawning L-134?

Hi,
i´ve made some different experiences than Janne. I´ve tried to spawn teh L-134 without succes for nearly 2 years. I finally had succes the first time in april 2002, when i had removed two powerheads from the 134 tank, leaving two powerheads aiming at the surface. Instead of the powerheads i insatlled an air pump.
I increased the temperature to about 28°C.
Since then I´ve spawned them for four times.
pH 5,7-6,5; dgH ~2°; dkH 0, 120-220µS/cm LF; NO2 n.n.; NO3 20-60 mg/l, PO4 too high ;) ; O2 ~ 6-8mg/l

Fantastic. Great job.
Do you keep the water-values stabile or do you simulate rain-season?

Hi,
I keep them quite stabil, only the conductifity varies in small ranges (depending on NO3 and waterchanges, I have no plants in my L-134 tank).
Strong current is not as important as we thougt in former times.
A friend of mine has spawned them for at least ten times within the last two years in an Apistogramma tank nearly without current.
He already had some F2 fries. You can read his article on Klaus Dreymann´s website (in German): http://www.welse.net/seiten/l134a.htm

Hi,
After I wrote the articel I have split the group in two, 1+1 and 1+2 and I have them in two different tank setups. One pair in a 130 L tank with a current from a 1000 L powerhead aimed in the middle of the tank not directly to the cave and the other I keep in a 130 L tank without powerheads only a airdriven filterchamber and they have spawned in both tanks. I think the conductivity is more important then the current I have the same water in both tanks, pH 6,5-6,9 and 140-160 uS and the temp around 27 C.

Hi,
I agree with you, that for spawning L-134 a low cunductivity is much more important than for many other popular plecos like Hypancistrus spp.
In tap water (280µS/cm in Vienna) I never had success.
But you were the first, who told me, that they like quite low temperature from 25°C, all other L-134 keepers I know, me incl., told, that they showed much more activity with 27-29°C.
Maybe it has been a "Kirschbaum Effekt" with your first spawning.

Hi,
In my articel I ment that the temperature was lowered under the water changes with RO-water under one week from 28 C to 25 C degrees but after that I put the heater back and let the temp rice back to 27-28 C, they did'nt spawn before that.

Hi,
they have spawned in tubes of bamboo, which where closed in the backside, length about 12cm, diameter 3 to 4cm (they used different tubes because the tubes decompose after about 6-10 months).
Rolo´s L-134 spawned in similar tubes made of clay.

They did not take coconut shells and clay tubes, which hat the aperture on the alongeside.
Maybe the entrance at the end of the tube is a must, I didn´t hear of other caves they had taken to spawn at least.
