ID this ambiguous Catfish, got this catfish from Peru
ID this ambiguous Catfish, got this catfish from Peru
Excuse me, i want to ask about this Catfish ID.
I got this fish 2 month ago and the growth rate is very slow.
I don't know the ID because it's similar with Brachyplatystoma Vaillanti
The Characteristic and food :
When i got it, first is very calm and friendly with other fish. Never attack other fish and peacefully. After around 1 month, this catfish turn into aggresive fish with other fish especially catfish and same kind.
first when it arrived inside my tank, this fish want to eat pellet ( konishi sinking ) now eating small fish.
i don't know are this fish is the real vaillanti or fake vaillanti
because when i got this fish, the local people call it 'cunchi salton catfish'
anyone can answer and solve my Catfish ID ?? Hopefully i could get and know the ID of this catfish Thankyou very much

Unfortunately, I cannot ID your fish.
However, I might have an idea why your fish suddenly became aggressive.
In my book Exotic Marine Fishes,of which the famous Herbert Axelrod was a coauthor, it said that fishes in an aquarium are often less aggressive when newly introduced because they have no territories to guard and are somewhat terrified of each other.
Cheers
PS: Why are pictures upside down?

This fish is familiar to hobbyists. Yet, I, for one, am not sure what it is, although I've been seeing it for several years now pop up here and there. This thread and those linked in there should start steering you in some direction: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=38098&hilit=vaillantii

Looks like or to me but I could be mistaken
I can stop keeping catfish whenever I want. I just don't think I'll ever want to do that...

Bottom photo in original group is not an iheringichthys, snout too wide. Money on viallanti, but will only know really as it grows a little more. Bit like my sperata, which is turning out to be aor and not acicularis.
