Hi. I don't know if "rare" is the right word, but they certainly command a premium. They are generally available. I have a couple dozen regular and a dozen albino. They generally go for about $12 in my area. - Frank

P.S. They are my FAVORITE cory.
I used to be schizophrenic, but we're OK now. At least that's what my dog is always telling me!

A COUPLE DOZEN? If they ever start spawning you'll never see an empty tank again. Mine, a pair, used to lay over 400 eggs a spawn and they weren't even full size yet.

I have group that a bought from a local cory breederat a swamp $20 for bag of three juveniles. There is a group of cory breeder here in the Chicago area. I am not sure of the price in the local stores. I think they can be found. I don't know that stasis in other parts of the country. There are many large fish farms in Florida that breed many species of cory. Also they import from Asia all the time. From what I read the albino sterbai came from Asia original.

C sterbai rare?

Post by Alan_au »

I wouldn't consider C sterbai to be rare here but they are always more expensive than the general run of the mill cories. In my experience they are not over prolific so maybe this is the reason they still command a price similar to what they did way back. I still have 8 of the original 10 that I got in August 1990 and believe it or not two of those big old ugly girls spawned two weeks ago even tho they are getting around on walking frames these days.

Young fish can generally be had in most aquarium stores here for AU$15

In the UK Sterbai as wild adults do command a premium price we ourselves sell them for £8.75 compared to many other less than £3.00.

Nowadays , tank breds are readily available and we sell young adults at 3 for£10.00.

Not to seem like an uneducated American cretin - but just what is £1.00 equal to these days in U.S. $ and what is AU $1 in U.S. $?

Out of my 2 dozen about 4 have reached breeding size and they are going to be one of my pet projects in the new year. My albinos are still a bit small but I'm feeding them constantly with blackworms and they should grow fairly quickly. - Frank

Hi Frank,

Roughly £1 sterling is about 1.75 $ US and 1$ US is approx 0.57 GB£
whilst 1$ Aus is about 0.74 US $ and 1$ US is about 1.34 Aus $

i.e. £10.00 = $5.70 US

Graeme,

Most shops in my area stock C.sterbai, that range in size from one inch upwards and they always seem to fetch a good price. I have about 200 coming along nicely at the moment.

Thanks for the replys. For years i've never seen any up here and now all of a sudden they seem to be flooding in with a high price tag £8 to £11 each on size's. I was just wondering if they are a most-wanted Cory or easily available for everyone.

Thanks.
Graeme.

They are now being bred in Singapore and really should be as available as the "old standards".. Paleatus and aeneus.

Bythe way I seem to have made a basic mistake in my currency conversion yesterday, I stated that £10.00 = $US 5.70... that should have read $17.50.!!

no comments about retailers pricing please !!

In Spain they used to be a very rare species, and was expensive (15â?¬-25â?¬). Now prices are decreasing and is more often available in the shops. May be I have some relation with this. For me they are as a plague. All of this (and some hundreds more), was born in home:

How fast do they grow compare to other cories? I remember reading an article that was suggesting that Sterbai's are real slow growers. Perhaps this is one of the reason for their high price?
