Rio Magdalena Pims

Post by Shane »

Hello all,
Spent yesterday at the Rio Magdalena in the village of Ricaurte which is between Melgar and Giradot. The water was very high and which did not make for a great collecting day.

I actually ended up doing most of my collecting with a small barbless hook and earth worms which I borrowed from a local fisherman.

The most common fish was this small pim which may be Pimelodus grosskopfi.

The catch of the day was this beautiful Zungaro. The fisherman told me they reach two feet.

The <i>Pimelodus</i> is definitely not <i>P. grosskopfii</i> as this species has a much longer adipose fin and has numerous black spots not present in your fish. I would say it looks more like a member of the blochii/clarias group.
The <i>Zungaro</i> could be <i>Zungaro</i> (<i>Pseudopimelodus</i>?) <i>bufonius</i>.

Actually, that's just the generalized ("primitive") bagroid form. Many unrelated catfishes: mochokids, ariids, pimelodids and bagrids (to name a few) exhibit this shape. The resemblance is in no way indicative of any close relationship.
