Hi,
this is Hypancistrus sp. (L70). There are still some breeders for this fish in Germany. It will be difficult to survive for this type. It's for the real fan.

Re: "L236" spawned
Hi, L 287 was introduced in December 2000 in Datz. The animal was an incidental catch of Panaqolus sp. (L 74) from the Rio Para. That means: 1 animal, no catching location. Perhaps this L 287 war catched in Xingu and then jumped from his tank over to the L 74 tank at the exporter ;-) Than: In Februa...

Re: Who am I?
Hi, a very nive variant! Doesn't look like L 173 to me - seems to be a kind of L 333 typus. Look at the folowing picture: http://chromapark.de/apps/client/guder_f/cromapark/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Hypancistrus_sim236a.jpg These fish came from Belem to Germany. When they are young they are white. ...

Re: "L236" spawned
Hi, congratulation for spawning a Hypancistrus. Please try to make some pictures, even from the parents. L 287 is not a valid L-Number, and the story behind this L-Number is just a bad joke, but I have a pair of an Hypancistrus type, called L 287 by Aquarium Glaser. So I call them L 287 (Glaser 2007...

Re: Hypancistrus ID. Was sold as L260
Hi, sorry to say, but this fish looks like a crossbreed between L 260 and L 66. I have seen such a form in Germany (sold as L 411! btw). They are nice, but please avoid mixing and crossbreeding Hypancistrus. In case of L260 the situation is really bad. I think "real" ones are very rare, si...

Hi,
I don't know what the others in the box are - but the plec on this picture is L 260. A little bit stressed, but adult an typical in shape and marking.
I hope that you have some females in the box, this is allways the problem with L 260.

Re: Hypancistrus L400?
I have a large group of L174, L174 all have very small eyes. So this is the reason these pl*co's aren't L174, because these have big eyes. Hi, yes, the size of the eyes is the difference between L 174 ans L 400. But it is also true, that big eyes are a sign for bad growth too. Since some people thi...

Re: Hypancistrus L400?
Hi, easy to say, that they are not L 174. L 400 is very similar to L 399 and other Belo Monte Variants (L 345, L 287, "lower Xingu"). So it is not easy to say what they are. Problem is: They are far to small after one year. They look skinny. Perhaps they are tankbred. The big eyes and the ...

Re: Bought as L173, maybe L66 or L333 white band?
Hi, good point apistomaster: "L333 is an L-number which I think is actually represented by a good half dozen variants." This is the key that leads to new thinking about hypancistrus. We got a single l-number i.e. L 333 and find many different fish. Same is with L 66 and of course L 173. On...

@ Yann, sorry I have only heard, that some people say, that Gl*ser has sold H. sp. "santarem" (now L 450) as L 173b. I think this is just a rumor and not true. If so someone has betrayed Gl*ser, because these Fishes has been tankbred. I have L 173 and L 450 for myself - they are very diffe...

Re: Bought as L173, maybe L66 or L333 white band?
Hi, I have visited Aquarium Glaser several times. When it comes to rare hypancistrus, like L 173, 236, 345 the amount of imported wildcaught fish was very low, sometimes only one. Often exporters in Brasil send some unknown fish together with this rare L-Numbers. So you have to pick the rare L-Numbe...

Hi,
they are very small. It is very difficult to identify juvenile Hypancistrus. Looks like a variant of L 333.
These are tankbred Hypancistrus, so you just have to ask the breeder.

Re: Bought as L173, maybe L66 or L333 white band?
Hi, sorry to say, but these fish are not L 173 for sure. In my opinion these fish are the result of selecting special marked individuals out of Hypancistrus sp. (Gurupa) (first), (L 287) a lower Xingu form and perhaps even L 66. Perhaps, when these fish were sold at 30mm, they have looked like L 173...

Re: New pl*co's, L260 or L411?
Hi,
sorry to say, but this is Hypancistrus sp. L 411 and not L 260. Body shape, fin and pattern is typical. L 260 is blurred with L 410, so even when the pattern looks different, there are many hybrids out there. Real L 260 are very rare.

Re: Spotted hypan from Rio Tapajos?
Hi, the image on aquabid shows Hypancistrus sp (L 136) (a, b, c are just different markings). These fish comes from Rio Demini a tributary to Rio Negro (Amazon) (northwester brasil). From Rio Tapajos comes Hypancistrus sp (L 262). It seams, that L 136 is exported regularly, not smuggled out of Brasi...

Re: Breeding L260
Hi, feeding small Hypancistrus is very easy with living artemia/brine shrimp nauplii. In my opinion, feeding them right in the first weeks is the key to a good growth rate. If not, they will grow very slow. After the first days you can add pulverized tablets with algae. Try to feed them 6 to 8 times...

Re: Hypancistrus sp. L174 Wild
Hi, Yes - this is Hypancistrus sp (L 174). Nice markings and good contrast. Identification is easy: - small eyes, position more on top of the head - c-type caudal fin, smaller fins - long head/nose Next is L 400, and some breaders crossbreed this species because l 174 fry grows very slow. Hybrids gr...

Hypancistrus = looks like Hypancistrus sp. L 400 with untypical (damaged) tail V28 = Hemiloricaria lanceolata V27 01 = Hypancistru...

Hi,
in my opinion it is not possible to identify this fish. I see a typical l 66 (image 3 & 9), and a typical l 401 (image 5). The rest is something else. This situation leads to hybrids for sure.
Greetings Felix
