Re: How realistic is it to keep a Red Tail Catfish?

Realistic? It is realistic if you have the resources. Sure a 52k gallon tank is great but not realistic to most people. 2000 gallon round stock tanks are a good thing to start with. Filtration should be powerful and reliable as water quality is a must. An automatic water changer would be ideal too. ...

Re: Tiger spitting food out.

I'm interested in the size of this pond, I'd love to see pictures and love to hear more information on it. It sounds great!

As for your PH concerns, I wouldn't be too concerned. My ph here is 8.1 ish and have had zero issues in the past 8 years. :)

Oxydoras Niger in the 1200

I meant to do this last month but forgot. While working in Pittsburgh I stopped into a local fish store and noticed a young skinny Oxydoras Niger and thought to myself... Huh, I don't think I've ever seen one of these for sale before... Knowing that they get 30" or better I thought it was proba...

Re: The Nugget Chronicles .

My big tank is automatic, the water exits at the high side of the sump... Very simple... As for the cost of the well, it's not just the digging of the well, it's everything else that's involved... I might be able to get it done for around 2500, but won't entertain that till my building is built.... ...

Re: The Nugget Chronicles .

A well would have cost 3-4K. And I'd still have to pay for sewer... It would have taken 15 years to make it worth it....

I'm speaking at the next G.A.A.S. Club meeting!

I'm speaking on a new subject at the next GAAS (Greater Akron Aquarium Society) Club meeting on Memoirs of a 1500 gallon. It's about the construction and expansion of the tank going from 800 gallons to 1500 gallons, then back down to 1200 gallons... Here's a link to the website and meeting announcem...

Re: The Nugget Chronicles .

Not water quality, possible stress from the move. He was in the bag a while, temp may have dropped on him then. You know how ich is, it can lie dormant for a good while. The store owner had warned me to look for it. I did not see any when I cought him out of the tank at the store...

Re: The Nugget Chronicles .

Great news! Nugget ate a sinking carnivore pellet last nite... Practically by hand! LOL Something about hand feeding a 2" redtail doesn't compare to feeding one that mistakes your hands as food! LOL

No more live food for Nugget! LOL That didn't take long! LOL

Re: The Nugget Chronicles .

Look closer at the before and after pictures. When we got him all or most of his fins were worn down to nubs after living in a 125 for 7 years... As for RTCs only lliving ten years. I believe you are wrong, while your theory is somewhat true you need to take into account that RTCs are apex predators...

The glass in my tank is the same size and thickness as a friend of mines glass in his 15,000. 3/4"x30"x72". Only difference is my glass is horizontal, his is verticle... So I don't think the glass thickness is an issue. As for m tank not being big enough, I'm aware, and I'm also aware...

My hope is that this thread will help to inform many fish keepers about this fish from my first hand experience. On the way home yesterday the kids and I were discussing how old we would all be when I'd have to rent a back hoe to bury him...Because I'll be too old to dig by hand! LOL

Apparently he enjoyed his first nite here. He's got a tiny little belly on him! LOL
