Jools, it was more of a question than an answer. And of course you are absolutely correct in your statement of simularity to different sp. and unknown location. :) I said... Could it be simular.... to the parnaibae??? But to answer your question of me, I would say that some differences would have to...

I'm sorry, I'm not as up on plecs as you lot - just going on what Shane said on PF which was that maximum SL was 11-12", and that they didn't go over that to his knowledge. I've personally seen what I would class as liposarcus at much bigger than 11-12" (but as I said to Shane if there's ...

Doh! Thanks for clarifying. That top pic has interesting striping for an L226, although I've not seen any juvies, only adults so that is perhaps where my malfunction was. I still see in that L206 that the stripes are broken in the caudal and the markings not as clear in the head region as stated in ...

Definitely not L333... I've only seen but a pic or two of the L206 but what I can gather... it appears that the markings aren't as clear on the head and the striping is a little bit different on the body at minimum... (I'm sure it is possible for there to be "other" differences) but Siluru...

MatsP, I have an adult male albino bristle nose who is now four years old, and it wasn't until the past two years that the bristles have really come in, I bought it as a young female and did for about the first two years would have put money down that it was a female due to lack of bristles. As I do...

Is your LFS able to know where the fish in question came from? With the hundreds of ancistrus sp. it is sometimes difficult if not impossible to pinpoint without a collection point. It does remind me with the patterning you spoke of ancistrus sp.1 as well... one would think that the LFS would know i...

I say female. I have a couple species of bristle nose that the females have bristles around the mouth like your pic and a couple that do not have any bristles at all (but never up the snout). If it were a male, judging by how long the bristles around the edge are in your pic, you would see some grow...

Ancistrus sp.5 is still a dwarf species... the long fins just make them appear larger but their bodies really aren't... basically they are the same as sp.2, sp.3 and sp.4 for example just veil fins...
