Re: My pleco tank, inspired by a biotope
Very cool Jeanne Thank you Leporacanthicus heterodon is really high up on my list of "big plecos" ... err, big in my concept... for future tank expansion. God luck with them. Cheers, Eric it's a really nice fish, if I had a bigger aquarium I would buy a group, but unfortunately I don't ha...

Re: Hemiancistrus L128 sexing
MarcW , Yes yes, it is difficult to find females on the market. In my opinion because males in the wild spend so much time inside their dens, while females swim around among the rocks. It is not possible to catch these adult plecos while they are swimming, but they can only be fished by catching th...

Re: Hemiancistrus L128 sexing
MarcW, Thanks for the reply. I've read all your old threads about your experience with these beautiful fish, so I was hoping you'd get back to me :d I will monitor the situation, based on your experience I know that I am very likely to have only boys (unfortunately). So far acclimatization is going...

Re: Hemiancistrus L128 sexing
They are very shy, but have already started eating, especially courgettes, peas and worms, but ignore any tabs or granulated food.
I photographed these two, they both look male to me. Maybe then I only have male?

Hemiancistrus L128 sexing
Can anyone figure out if I have both male and female? Unfortunately I can't provide better photos, because they are now inside the aquarium and it is impossible to fish them again.

Re: Does Hemiancistrus subviridis eat snails?
I have an important update! A few days ago I clearly saw my H. subvirdis eating a snail for the first time. A noise similar to screeching or scratching something hard (I'm not sure how to describe it), caught my attention. I looked where it came from: it was the teeth of H. subvirdis "scratchin...

DSC_2119.jpg DSC_2145.jpg I have a group of 7 Hypancistrus L236 of various varieties (Super White, Super Yellow and Basic), then L260, two small Hypancistrus zebra and 2 L168. Obviously for the moment I have no intention of dedicating myself to breeding, otherwise I would not keep different varieti...

My pleco tank, inspired by a biotope
I had been away from this hobby for more than ten years. To start over, I wanted to do something different than usual, instead of filling the tank with artificial caves, I wanted to try and create something more natural. I wanted to put both Hemiancistrus subviridis and Rio Xingu pleco, luckily thei...

Re: Does Hemiancistrus subviridis eat snails?
(one of the spp. of Planorbidae?) Yes Did you see any snails being eaten? Unfortunately not, in fact it was only when I saw that all the killer snails were dead that I started to think that someone was eating the snails. Until the day before adding H. Subviridis to the aquarium I had thousands(!) o...

Does Hemiancistrus subviridis eat snails?
Hi all, have any of you ever noticed if H. subviridis L200 actively eats snails? Leporacanthicus heterodon L172 is known to eat slugs, but I've never heard of H. subviridis. Yet it seems to me that mine has devoured a huge amount of snails in a short time. Until recently I had a big problem with sna...

Re: Tips for new pleco breeding project thanks.
cavefish , oh really nice specimen! 4 inches is already an interesting measure. Instead of the cucumber, I give slices of zucchini (courgettes), they are eaten in a short time, including the peel, so you don't have to fish anything from the aquarium. I simply throw them in the tank and the fish eat...

Hide caves for pleco
Hi, this is how I masked up some pleco cave in clay. It was very easy to make, I bought some pieces of wood and some clay cave and only used the tools shown in the photos. I am very satisfied with the result, it really just looks like natural wood and you can't see the clay cave inside. I really thi...

Re: Tips for new pleco breeding project thanks.
Hi Cavefish , I have also read other experiences of L200 very shy. In my case it's really amazing how my L200 is always out during the day and disappears into its cave as soon as the lights go out. I was so excited about it that now I'm looking for a breeding group, whereas before my plan was to kee...

Re: L168 feeding
I write an update on my experience, maybe it can be useful to someone. Until a few weeks ago I only had omnivorous plecs tending towards carnivore in the tank (you can see the list on my profile), so I never gave vegetables. Then I added Hemiancistrus subviridis and started giving a lot of vegetable...

Re: Tips for new pleco breeding project thanks.
I might just go for L200 anyway(would be nice with a pleco that you see, are you having them in a breeding setup or community?) At the moment I have only one adult specimen(you can see the photo in the topic below this), but I plan to reach 4 as soon as possible. I don't want to miss the spectacle ...

Re: Tips for new pleco breeding project thanks.
Peckoltia compta is incredibly beautiful when young, but unfortunately as an adult its color tends to fade and become much less interesting. A pleco with a very similar color but which maintains the bright yellow and black stripes even as an adult is L168 (Dekeyseria brachyura/Zonancistrus brachyuru...

Re: Male or female?
Thanks for the reply. I was reading in this discussion https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21120&hilit=sexing+l128 how difficult it was to distinguish the sex from the genital papilla (L128 is a very similar species to L200) I find H. subviridis incredibly beautiful. It has a gor...

Re: Male or female?
Thanks for the reply. Searching old threads in the forum, it seems to me that sexing these species is more difficult than other plecos.
I will observe how the fish develops in the coming months and whether it will get pectoral spines or not. Then I will post a new photo and ask again.

Re: Courtship?
Great, thank you very much!
Today everything is quiet again, they don't fight anymore and they have a very bright and shiny yellow and black color again.
It was strange to see them fight yesterday, they usually never interact with each other

Are my L168s starting a courtship? I'm surprised to see this behavior, they never did. They did as in the video for about an hour.

bekateen , thanks for your answer! If you reproduce your L052s without giving them real vegetables like potatoes and courgettes it means that I have nothing to worry about. You gave me good news, I'm happy! I will try not to miss the vegetable component in the feed that I will give them. I have rea...

L168 feeding
Hi everyone, sorry for my bad english. I have had two Dekeyseria brachyura L168 in the tank for just over a month. On the web it is reported as a mainly herbivorous fish, but my parents don't eat any vegetables. I'll explain. They greedily devour any type of granulate, vegetable or protein, it makes...
