Re: Do you think it's possible I have created a balanced eco

But just because an aquarium has 0 NH3, NO2 and NO3 doesn't make it perfectly healthy. Other toxins that immeasurable build up.

Re: Hypancistrus zebra?

There is no single hard one way to do things with fish. I've had a lot of success doing things the wrong way. Usually because the fish are still in quarantine and spawn before I set them up, or because I didn't have the tank space, or whatever. It just makes me laugh that people have read things MU...

Re: Do you think it's possible I have created a balanced eco

What about waterchanges? It's balanced, but water would have to cycle through it.

Re: Hypancistrus zebra?

I think the pair of H. zebra that spawned dozens of times in a 20 gallon long would be shocked to know that it wouldn't work that way ;). There are so many ways to be successful with these fish. The real problem is that there are just so many more ways to NOT be successful. If you notice excessive ...

With a group that's too few in numbers to split up; keep them together. 5 should be the minimum number per tank.

Looks more like a nutrient deficiency. Very few if any species eat Anubias sp.

Re: L-173b from Glaser

Whatever happened? Did you get any fry resembling the "typical" L173?

I mean L236 can often times look drab, but then you get a few specimens that resemble the famous picture of Ingo Seidel.

Seperating pairs

Why is it with Loricariidae we keep them in colonies of 5-10 individuals with only 2 breeding individuals while with other fish like Cichlids and Anabantoids we keep in pairs away from the colony. Wouldn't it be wiser to separate the breeding pair from the rest to give the other individuals a chance...

Re: Sump for breeding tanks

I mean with multiple tanks draining into one sump; it would help keep nitrates down. I know waterchanges will too, but plants would be a nice safeguard especially emersed and floating species.

Re: Sick L260 gulping super fast darting sunken belly

While I agree that any ammonia at all is going to be very stressful to a fish in 7.5 pH water, I do not agree that you should lower the temperature. IME, L260 thrive and are happiest above 84, so 81 is plenty low to give them enough dissolved oxygen to work with. The picture shows frayed fins. Are ...

0.25 ppm of NH3 is not normal; that is toxic. You need to do a waterchange immediately. What filters are you running?

Lower the temperature to 27-26C.

Re: Moving bed filters

Sintered glass does have more surface area, but has the problem of fragmenting over time because of the violent action within the reaction chamber. The glass also colonizes a lot faster. In the end, a lot of the media ends up getting dumped into the tank where it can be a real nuisance though. Larr...

Re: Using deep gravel and bacteria to control nitrogen

As far as floating plants, the best for nitrates are Eichornia sp.; they are commonly used in waste water treatment. http://article.sapub.org/10.5923.j.re.20120205.04.html#Sec3.1 As far as emerged, I'd say Pothos works really well. Or you can setup a reactor using a media like Sachem deNitrate and r...

Sump for breeding tanks

I want to setup 4x20L's as breeders; then have a common 55G sump for all of them with a UV and Mazzei venturi [for aeration] on the return. I know this is frowned upon, but I'd rather take advantage of all that water volume for stability and ease of maintenance.
