Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Forgot to mention: I paid 133,- Euro's for it. Prices for UV sterilizers go from approx 50 Euro's to very expensive. Apparently a lot of the cheap ones perform very poor and are only usable as clarifier and not as a sterilizer. It took me more than a day of checking out the internet to determine whi...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

This is a bad weekend for my bank account! I ordered additional to th eabove protein skimmer and pump a "TMC Pro Clear Ultima 30 watt". Also this could help the TSN a little bit by improving the water quality. uvc-pro-clear-ultima-tmc-30-watt.jpg Also this I ordered with in mind my next en...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Pfffff…….. In situations where you do not see improvement in your pet you tend to spend money on things that are probably not going to solve the issue. But then at least you can say to yourself that you tried. So to make myself feel better I ordered a brand new freshwater protein skimmer including a...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

A few LED’s compared to the other costs are not even on my mind. It’s more or less a “design” and “purpose” issue that light and plants are difficult. There is quite some (heat) lightning in the enclosure. But the issue is that the land area is above a big part of the water. Water surface is approx....

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Small update: IMGP2651.JPG Have been changing water regular this week I still do not see signs of improvement or even changes at all. He is eating but in my opinion clearly not as he should. His body mass is more than just good and it looks he is gaining even more weight instead of losing weight. P...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Sorry for the people that do not like a lot of reading. For the ones that maybe can use the lessons learned out of this I write it as complete as possible. Hopefully this allows also others to provide advice. Status: The TSN is doing better but still not as he should. I reckon that there was an “esc...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Way to busy especially the coming days so in between I quickly went to the shop to buy the goods. Been slowing down with water changes since there was improvement. So approx. 60 hrs ago since the last time I have been changing water. I first measured the water again with a 6 in 1 JBL test strip. Bel...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Summary of loose things mentioned earlier in this topic. What will I /want to feed my TSN: 1) Whole frozen fresh water fish but fed in pieces. The fish are too big to be fed at once. I buy these fish in 10kg for approx. 23 Euro’s. Which is mega cheap. This is through a large trading company that als...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Update: Yesterday I fed the caimans. One of them ate nearly all so I tried if the other one wanted a rat pinky today. He was not interested. Was already some time ago since I tried feeding a baby rat to the TSN. I know and I agree it should mainly eat fish! He came straight away, checked it extended...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

One of the warnings I find on he internet is that TSN often die because of that. I checked sturgeon and trout pellets and they most often have approx 19-22% oil/fat On a biological one it mentioned approx 11% raw fat. For Hikari Masivore, which is specific for e.g. red tail catfish that is not less ...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Unfortunately the TSN did not eat today. I do not think it had anything to do with vitamins or minerals. I left the piece in the water for 2 hrs in front of his nose but he didn't even checked it out. He has been eating three days in a row and yesterday a bigger piece. If he would have been healthy ...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Bas, I found the Sera vitamines. Somehow that did'n't pop up during my quick search. Small bottle only cost 7 euro's so low cost test. Was doing some quick research today on youtube on commercial farming of TSN. You won't find much in English but in Spanish there is some. Two links I like to share f...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Will try the syringe tonight and will tell how it went. But no specific fish vitamins and minerals are available on the market. At least a quick search didn't show anything. So this is no long term solution. I only used tried Tetra Cichlid Shrimp Sticks. These dissolve quick in the water. Will check...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Feeding today: I used a big piece of fish today that I sprinkled rich with minerals and vitamins on the outside. It sticks very well to the slime of the fish. After letting it dry for a while it sticks even when tossed in the water. I knew the change was high that most of the minerals and vitamins ...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Lycosid, thanks! You made me think and I now know what to do next. In reply to 1) Fully agree with that they mainly should eat fish and not terrestrial food. But large catfish are known to sometimes eat ducklings or rats as well if the opportunity is there. Intermezzo: Keeping crocodilians only make...

Re: TSN (Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum) advice needed and sharing my experience

Thanks Bas! Well than I have sponsored JBL and additional junk in the cabinet. My thinking was that if you would follow the test procedure strictly and quick the pollution probably would be so low that this way would still give a good indication. To me water measurements are more about indications a...

Viktor thanks for the reply. Good to know that they can fast for long periods. I do not measure NH3 & NH4. I have a six (6) in one (1) JBL Easy Test. Not the most accurate way to test water but considering my circumstances I thought good enough to get a decent understanding of the water quality....

Re: Actual sizes (and why a belly)

Jools and Bas, thanks for your answers!
30 years is a very long time. Respect!

I understood most catfish are from the wild and not bread at farms. Does this mean that there is a possibility that I can ask a seller/trader for a cites paper, which should indicate the place of where they are caught?

Actual sizes (and why a belly)

I often find it hard to know the length which a fish can become. Some species are given a length which is possibly a length which it gets in an average aquarium. So smaller then what it could become. Others are given max lengths measured in nature which you will hardly meet in captivity. Unfortunate...
