Re: L134, Males dropped Odontodes, spawning season over?
I noticed the same when I had a breeding group of this species. The spawning period was always from Oct/Nov to Feb/March. Outside the spawning they would lose the odontodes and I could always predict when spawning was going to start again from the reappearance of hairy tails.

@ Walter .... Thanks very much for your informative post. I purchased a group of Wild Caught L046 a few months ago from a from a very reputed pleco breeder/importer here in Toronto, Canada who assured me that it was legal to export Wild Caught L46 out of Brazil as long as the correct paperwork was ...

Re: Wild Caught Zebra Plecos
The bottom line is that this species only occurs in Brazil and Brazil does not allow its export. Therefore, your LFS cannot claim that these are legally obtained WC H. zebra - there is no such thing. Also, how can they know the age of the fish if they are WC? Smells fishy to me... I'd ask to see the...

I have been looking through that group, to my untrained eye the best fit would be but I don’t know enough about the group to feel confident about that.

Re: How to identify L397s .....
Not L306 Panaqolus claustellifer . That species has fewer bands on the body and bold stripes on the face that form a 'keyhole' (more or less) between the eyes (claustellifer means keyhole I believe). It is really quite distinctive. We have seen this particular picture before and @bekateen pointed us...

Re: Panaqolus claustellifer L306
I have 4 wild adults, 3 males and 1 female. They remained colourful until they started breeding. Then the males' markings became less distinct but the female has kept her colours. They spawn regularly and the fry are stunning.

Yes I've noticed this too. When you shine a torch into a female's cave to check on a brood they often make that sound.

Thanks all. Having observed the fish for a few days I am pretty certain it is the same species as the ones it came in with, which are either or but probably the latter. I'll revisit this thread with better pictures when they have all grown a bit.

Re: Odd Panaqolus
Thanks Eric. I can see where everyone is coming from, saying 'Peckoltia'. However, I've kept several species of Panoqolus and Peckoltia over the years and I am certain this is a Panaqolus. For one, the eyes seem much too small for a Peckoltia at this size (4cm). So humor me, assume it is a Panaqolus...

Re: Odd Panaqolus
Thanks for the responses. I am as sure as can be that it is not a Peckoltia but a Panaqolus. Seeing it next to the clown plecs it is identical in shape, size of the eye, mouth, fins, etc. I am veering towards it being an unusual clown plec individual, but open to alternative suggestions.

Odd Panaqolus
I found this striking Panaqolus in a tank of P. maccus (or P. sp L448). They had apparently all come in the same shipment. Is it an unusually patterned clown plec or another species? Opinions?

Alongside the catfish were some other interesting fish, like this anabantoid Luciocephalus pulcher and this as yet nameless Nemacheilus loach

"44–45 vs. 49–56" for the anal fin ray count, no? So 50 would make it . Obviously I should have read the paper before I posted the first time!

Wow. What is going on there. Did it flood overnight or what? Yes, quite epic overnight storm. We had another one two days later and that bench with the boots on disapeared under water too. Since we spent much of our days wading through swamps anyway, a flooded camp didn't make that much difference ...

Central Kalimantan black waters
The last couple of weeks I have been on an expedition into forest on the left bank of the Sungai Rungan, Central Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). The substrate there was peat of varying depth and the water in the streams was stained like tea with pH of 3.5 - 4. Unseasonally heavy rain caused flooding...
