Re: 2014 All Aquarium Catfish Convention
Frankly, the in-room sales have become the highlight of the convention for me. Allows me to talk to people I might not have otherwise, as well as decimating my budget for the weekend. I've had the opportunity to talk to speakers in depth and really pick their brains. I've l...

Again, congratulations on another spawn You are fast becoming the master breeder of this species The arrangement of the tubes is unique. Do your adults spawn in the bottom tubes?

Re: Wood in the works...
It really depends on the species of plecos you have. Some are wood eaters and will gradually reduce the wood to toothpicks. I've never kept wood eaters and see a very slow reduction in the wood over time with the species I keep.
Congrats on the spawn, it is a lovely fish. One trick I got I believe from Eric Bodrock was to scrape the green algae off aquarium lids and offer it as a food for young whiptail fry. Has come in quite handy for the few whiptails I've worked with.
I've never tried...

Re: Hemiloricaria melini "BARCELOS"
I find that with most of the species of bottom dwelling fish the young remain motionless for the greater part of the daylight hours. I'm sure that this, along with their broken-up color pattern, are survival mechanisms to avoid predation. They don't search for their meals, as would cichlid fry. Even...

Wow! Spectacular video! Now THAT looks like the bottom of a stream in South America! You also have some of my favorite pencilfish, Nannostomas marginatus. I have to ask you, are the tubes that the melini are occupying open on both ends, or is one end closed off? I couldn't tell looking at the video....

Re: Ancistrus fry disputes
Nope! They will get worse especially males fighting for dominance or the best cave. In the worst case scenario I've seen almost the entire dorsal surface rasped off of the loser to the alpha male in a particularly nasty fight. I'm guessing that the challenger just wouldn't back down. Usually the los...

Re: Ancistrus fry disputes
Yes the aggression is very typical behaviour. You won't see it from the younger fry as they develop the aggression when they get older. I don't know if the fry are actually rasping the adults slime layer, but to observe them lounging on the adult's bodies is also typical behaviour.

Thank you Nicolas! Are you filtering the tank with a mattenfilter? It looks like a shallow tank? how many liters? It looks like quite a large amount of organic material on the bottom.

Felicitations! :d I've got 3 F1 male and females that spawned last year and I didn't get any hatchlings. The first 2 spawns I left with the male with no success, the last spawn I removed to a hatching container, again with no success. The sexual dimorphism was obvious, with the females being slightl...

Re: Synodontis Lucipinnis - mouth damage? Fighting?
In my extensive experiences keeping and breeding both lucipinnis and grandiops (multipunctatus) (since 1992)I've regularly observed fighting amongst both species. This seems to be pecking order establishment among the sexes. I don't think I can recall any male on female or vice versa aggressive figh...

The only concern would be the amount of food available to the Brochis. You may have to feed them when the lights are out.

[ If you get the chance at any point for detailed pictures of the adults side-by-side to clearly show sexual dimporphism it'd be most appreciated I did transfer what I think are a pair to a tank only 7 " deep. While in the transfer container, and side-by-side, from above I observed that the mal...

It seems as though you've already exhausted your resolve for obtaining Corys without paying retail and still not been satisfied. In order to get what you want you may have to bite the bullet and pay more than you're willing.

Re: Dianema urostriatum showing signs of spawning
This time the pair went into a flat thirty gallon tank of slightly aged tap water. By the next day they had a nest under the jar lid. Nothing happened until I went away that weekend. When I came back I found that they had spawned and eaten all but two eggs. They were taken out but did not hatch. Hey...

Green beans are about the only veggie that I steam before feeding to bristlenose. Otherwise they get raw potato peels, sweet peppers, zuchinni, watermelon rind, sliced broccoli stems, etc.

Re: Breeding corydoras without substrate
I have bred many different species of Corys without any substrate. That said I do keep a little sand in all of my dedicated Cory tanks these days as I do believe that they prefer it to be able to nose around in it looking for food morsels. I do raise fry in smaller containers. If they are flow-throu...

Re: My first Ancistrus Claro spawn
I have not had to do anything special to "trigger" my adults to spawn. They are fed twice a day and get 50% water changes twice monthly. The tap water that I use is of medium hardness, with a pH of ~7.8. I separate the fry from the male within a couple of days of hatching, and add some alg...

Re: My first Ancistrus Claro spawn
I have 2 males and 2 females in a tank with a footprint of 36"x18". When the alpha male is breeding or tending a spawn I have on occasion observed the other male trying to enter the spawning cave. This can be quite a determined battle. I have also had to net eggs (usually only 4-6) that we...
Doesn't sound like anything to worry about. I've had Corys and other fish do similar things when just added. They chill out after time. Just a minor thought though, if you have a light/bright window shining on that side of the tank it might create a mirror type reflection in...
