Likewise, I bought one of these guys as an S. Longi and it looked exactly as yours does. Also turned out to be a hybrid :x

You can sex these fish very easily as the male genitals are very visible as a small pointed protrusion in the likely area. Females will either not have any growth or a very small protrusion. See Catelog and COTM. The behavior of the fish sounds like you have recently put them in the tank and they ar...

I'm probably just going to use it for my ragtag bunch of Synodontis. 1 Eupterus, 1 Angelicus, 3 Robbianus and some small BN plecs. They don't need much space and then I will use my regular 75 gallon for local collection of bullheads and sunfish.

Best sized tanks for catfish only tanks

I'm looking to get a new tank for only catfish so I want it to maximize surface area and minimize unnecessary height. What sizes do most people here use. I've seen nice 33 and 40 long tanks and even a really cool 75 long being 72' long!!

Also where can I get these longbodied tanks?

I hope that you understand that a tank upgrade will not even allow you to keep even one of these fish...have you looked at the Cat-eLog yet, these fish can grow almost 3 feet long. The CotM article mentions an 800 gallon tank!

I would agree that this definitely, at least on pattern, resembles a TSN juvenille. Do the black and white stripes change to the adult vertical barring or are there color variations in this fish?

Another thought would be the diet of the syno's. Hopefully someone else will reply to your question, but until then, what do you feed them?

If he is submissive to the other syno he could be sustaining damage in his eyes from bites. I have noticed that is one place that is frequently injured when my syno's fight. Mine clear up after a few days but yours may have sustained more permanent damage... Just a thought, it could certainly be som...

I wonder if you should be destroying those as you catch them. I'm not sure what kind of population they have there and what the DNR people advise but I would think the less of them in TX water the better.

Also, do all of them seem to have the deformaties like the video shows?

I believe that when this fish grows to adult size it will certainly be Eupterus. These fish have a ton of variability when young I've heard and this one looks exactly like mine when it was a juvie.

OK, thanks everyone,

My test kits indicated
0 ammonia
0 nitrite
15 nitrate

So I guess I should be fine and I will keep a close eye on the fish.

Thanks again,

Hey guys, I just came back from a short trip (4 days) and I looked at my tank and realized the heater had been knocked off the power strip. The temp in the tank had dropped to about 64 degrees F'. The tank had three 4' syno robbianus which clearly looked sluggish at the very low temp but are doing f...

From what I've heard, there is just about 0 chance that these are really the S. Longi's. I ran into some syno's listed at my local store that had the same label but they turned out to be hybrids of course...take a pic of them and get them identified before you get them.
