my Apistogrammas were outcompeting my Hastatus and I was losing Hastaus fry. I separated them and the Hastatus have slowly recovered. Just an observation in my fishroom.

Mine only started to show differences in sex once fed heavily on live foods. They all looked exactly alike, then with addition of live foods the ladies started to swell and started to produce eggs. Once mature, the ladies are round and fat. Males seem to stay slender and much smaller.

The hastatus use all levels of water. My group does sit on the bottom a lot.
I too keep pygmies and Hasbrosus.

I keep both together in my breeding colony. No problems. And don't think they will interbreed.

And even if you purchased from three different stores, the stores could possibly be using the same wholesaler. So might all come from same stock.
