Re: BN fin length?

I'll differ - I have babies from short-fin x long-fin and couldn't see the difference right away. I did not make note of how soon the difference could be seen but it was definitely not immediately.

Re: Fat Medusa

I got her in October, wild-caught, so who knows how old she is (other than adult). She chooses to go by the male's cave to get to the food (you can see his tail sticking out of the cave). He then whacks her with his tail, she retreats, and then trys again. This can go on for quite some time @-)

I'm so ashamed Eric. it's a spoon I use to keep cucumber on the ground :d Don't be ashamed! Everybody needs to have a few practical items in their tanks. And besides, you could have explained this by saying that you were trying to recreate the "natural" habitat of your fish by adding a li...

I did heat and salt treatment (no meds) for ich in my 45g and didn't lose any plants, fish, or snails.

Re: Tough catfish (& Endlers)

Yep, I'm going to have to see about a generator. Luckily my house is very small! (I live in the country as well.) Our temps aren't as bad as yours but we don't usually have *winter* all winter long. This year's proving to be an exception. I remember one New Year's Day when it was 90 deg. I did lose ...

Re: Filtration Problems

A few thoughts here. 1. Fish almost never starve themselves to death. There is no reason they will not eat the Repashy Veggie mix. Paint it on rocks and feed it that way. Keep feeding it until they start to eat it. 2. I do not think you have a filtration problem, I think you have stocking issues. Y...

Re: Filtration Problems

With 3-4 spawns in the tank and all that competition, these guys will eat anything I put in there! I forget about the peas; I do have them and feed them when I do remember. Even the Medusas (wild-caught) eat the Repashy and the veggies. I have Seachem Purigen and Matrix in my filters as well as inte...

Re: Filtration Problems

I don't have any real schedule for what I feed. I don't much care for veggies myself so I mostly buy them for the fish. When they don't get veggies I most often use Repashy gel foods, which make less mess than the dry algae wafers. I use petri dishes for the gel food and / or wafers and it localizes...

Re: Filtration Problems

I have 5 tanks with Plecos (regular, long-fin and red bristlenoses, and 2 medusas). I have sponge or mesh pre-filters in all my tanks (all HOB filters). I clean the pre-filters at least every other day. The largest tank has 3 adult red bristlenoses and close to 100 babies so you can see why I clean ...

Tough catfish (& Endlers)

Maybe it’s hybrid vigor? Just went through a power out from 4 p.m. ‘til 9:30 p.m. the next day, 5 tanks (45g, 10g, 14g, 2 - 8.7gs). My house is total electric so all I had was water, no help at all. I do have battery-powered air pumps but they’re pretty weak for the 45g (tall tank). Temperatures out...

Try rubbing the zucchini with the spirulina. As they eat the spirulina they might discover that the zucchini is also food.

Observations on BNs and black hair algae

This might not be news to anybody else but I found it interesting - from watching 4 spawns now in the tank, it appears that they aren’t able physically to eat it. The babies try, and work at it quite diligently, before giving up. The juveniles and adults just sucker over it and don’t try to eat it. ...
