Re: Catfish LFS shouldn't stock?
that's god's own truth...... and it's not just size; once the word goes out that a fish is rare or endangered, suddenly there's a whole crowd out there driving the demand; price goes up, poaching ensues, species gets even more endangered. as for the difference between hybrids and true specxies that ...

I can add to this list with a few Mochokiella paynee wich I bought in the summer of 1986, already at least 2 years old or so. In essential Mochokiella is a small Synodontis, sort of. And I bought a group of 5 Synodontis nigriventris back in May 1984, three of whom still survive as up today, in Pecto...

keeping more males seems to work with Syno's. I've always kept a little less males than females in my showtanks. but for breeding a bit more rivalry works best; Syno males are lazy! they seem to get in action only when they fear someone else will do it, if they won't; hence more males. A single pair...

how do you keep 2 male bettas together??? By sticking to mouthbreeding Betta species. They do fine in groups, love densely planted tanks, and quite often the females are worse than the males. fascinating fishies! I've had Betta picta (wich did fine), Betta rubra (next to impossible to keep alive) a...

There's a truckload of leechspecies that look exactly like that, and they're scavengers, and at worst eggrobbers, but rarely bloodsuckers. the ones that such blood from fish usually have very big, obvious suckers on both front- and rear end..... gross as it may be, this beastie is probably harmless....

You could stay biotope and go after the elusive Amazonian counterpart of the needlenose; Potamorraphis guianensis, if I'm correct..... never seen them in the LFS, but it's a VERY pretty beastie! http://www.elacuarista.com/atlas/images/potamorrhaphis_guianensis2.jpg BUT hoewever, you can count on fis...

oh, no, that's not true. The whole trick is proper care and a zoo-sized tank and they definitely WILL reach lengths very close to the wild. A cichlid-shop housed two Phractocephalus for years in a 3000+ liter tank for at least 2 decades, and they passed the three-foot mark years and years ago. Mind,...

Maybe THAT's why it turned out into a big mess-up (wich I admit took some doing from me) when we COULD have met, but missed it altogether. It's the Gods, Dinyar! 8) or Fate, Karma according to one's believe.... They try to save planet earth and they're keeping us separate for a very good reas...
Any Corydoras would fit in nicely, just get 4-6 of a single species and you'll do fine. Avoid big ones (C latus) or cold water species such as C barbatus. A single Ancistrus (Bristlenose), or a few Otocinclus can be kept in there, or a pair of nice Rhineloricaria lanceolata wich is a fine catfish, w...

finally found Burundi petricola's
Yep, I got them!! so now the last of the non-Burundi Tangies will go on the move. My tank is too crowded anyway, probably will be for ever, I guess. But we went to Germany and I spotted 5 ABSOLUTELY gorgeous true S petricola's (2 males, 3 females) wich were sold as "S polli". the lady on t...

:? :D It's a hard-to-quit habit, I agree! 6 1/2 year ago I quit the smoking of ordinary tobacco during everyday, but I didn't quit with the cannabis for obvious reasons  Then, years later I had to lessen and finally lay off that too, because the few remaing braincells were migrating through my...

Pturley, pix will be some doing! as you probably know, those cats hide back in their cave. A cam will perfectly zoom in on the cave but stubbornly refuse to get what's IN there on the pic (been there, done that) and my PC is still down, so unloading the camera will be a trial in itself. I'll try tho...

A mouth full of Phyllonemus typus!
keep yer fingers crossed ye-all BUT I spotted one of my bigger male Phyllo's being cosey yesterday. upon a closer look, he has a "huge chin", a female as company, and the eggs are clearly visible through the skin (big yellow spheres) today, they're both still in the burrow, mouths full of ...

no it's all convergent evolution, and that's only speaking about the sharklike cats, such as Iridescent Sharks (Pangasius/Pangasiodon), Arius, Pims etc. There's a truckload of cats out there that don't resemble sharks at all: Corydoras, Rubbernose Plecs, Whiptails, Clarias, Bumblebee-cats etc etc et...

Good thing you have a plague of egglaying easily crushable snails. The Burrowers are REALLY getting out of hand here, in the big Tanganyika showtank..... like hundreds and hundreds on the window, rocks, plants and sand; and they're both very hard-t-crush and livebearing too..... more and more, I'm l...
