Again, I would think juveniles would be more vulnerable with bright coloration. What appears to be bright coloration to us can actually be very efficient disruptive patterning when seen under water. As they grow, they may have few natural predators (who's going to take on an 18 inch Pseudacanth?!) ...

Interesting. Sounds like the fish might actually make it with improved packaging I'm pretty sure that it should be possible to ship them far more successfully given better care along the line. I think they do not tolerate low oxygen or other poor water conditions well, they are unable to last long ...

I'm not sure that expired algae wafers would kill your fish (even if they probably would do them little or no good As long as the packaging is unopened, there should be no problem with using foods that are slightly past their expiry date, although they should obviously only be used in conjunction w...

Pangasius in the Aquarium
sorry to have caused offence, Doubt there was any offence caused, it's good that you are interested and that you asked. You've touched on one of the real problems of the aquatic hobby. There are some Catfish which are simply totally unsuited for the home aquarium, and some that are too big even for...

Re: Planiloricaria cryptodon
Hello I'm looking for data dealing with habitat, food anf breeding of this species. Who can help ? Hi Charly! Hans Evers has done a great little book on breeding some of the Loricariinae, including, I'm pretty sure, this species. Worth searching out. Bearing in mind that Hans will be in the UK next...

I don't really have any problems with Methylene Blue but I never use it at the full recomended strength, usually at about half strength 1 drop per 2 Gal (9 ltr aprox) There is another natural control for fungus and that is a little fresh water shrimp called Acileus (Not sure about the spellling) th...

Would you think that these Tetrahymena could turn parasitic in normal conditions. It's possible, but I haven't actually seen it happen. Over time they could damage the gills of young fish enough to leave them open to secondary infections which could lead to a slow diminishing in numbers. Hard to sa...

Something that may be worth watching out for is an evil little bug that I have seen affecting Cichlid fry raised in bare aquaria, particularly following use of Methylene Blue when hatching eggs. It appears that under fairly sterile conditions (such as following use of Methylene Blue) this beast, Tet...

Re: Biotopes, would be great to have knowledgebase on this.
I know planetcatfish has some articles on this, but it would be really cool to get a broader arcive. If anyone wants to see film of Parotocinclus, Acestridium and many others in their natural habitat, some actively feeding, you need to get hold of the video available at http://www.belowwater.com It...

I think it would be suitable diameter 'plumbing' pipe that runs down from the powerhead, angled 45 degrees and run the whole length of the tank with an 'upright' at the end to take in water, thus creating a single flow direction as opposed to 'tumbling' the water. In the past two issues of FAMA the...

I can get that article over here in the UK, and make copies from that if that would make it any easier.

If you introduce some cover (some nice chunky pieces of bogwood or something) you should be able to keep quite a wide range of Catfish in there. I have heard of cases where Gibbiceps have found the flanks of Koi to be very tempting for sucking off mucus, and others may do the same. What sort of Cich...

Home made filters
Sump filters are a great way to filter a tank. Assuming you have, or are planning to get, a drilled tank to take the overflow, just make sure that the sump is large enough and has enough 'freeboard' to take the drawdown volume when the pump is switched off. It is a good excuse to get an aquarium cus...

Bagarius
From the previous incarnation of this forum, I had a private message relating to Bagarius, but each time I tried to answer a problem arose (nothing to do with the forum software, it was just coincidental). If the enquirer is now on this forum, could they get back in touch? I would like to be able to...
