Re: LF advice: pleco and cory breeding rack
I would second the individual tanks. I have used central systems often in the past. But I find that fish rarely bred in them and they were best used for growing out juveniles or for holding fish that weren't ready for spawning yet. For my breeding tanks, I use individual filtration (mostly Poret mat...

Lead has been used in aquariums for years without any apparent effects on fish. Everything from lead fishing weights used to hold food down, lead plant anchors, and bendable bubble wands all are lead or lead alloys. I have been using lead plant anchors to hold veggies down for decades. Never had any...

Thanks. Breeding fish is really fun for me. I like the challenging ones.
I need to update that list. I have a few more to add I think.

I will be there Saturday. My fish room is still torn down after the move so I won't be buying or selling anything. But I am looking forward to seeing old friends and making some new ones.
From the FB posts of the rare fish auction there are a great many nice fish going to be available.

b.reder. The very simple answer is yes. Because of hybridization and genetic engineering, many wild forms of plants such as wheat and corn are now threatened or extinct. It is now next to impossible to find maize or wheat as it existed 100 years ago. Cross pollination with man made varieties has add...

I have been keeping this species for a number of years attempting to breed them. I do get a lot of caving with the males but so far no spawns. Up until recently I had 6 of them in a 125. I am in the process of moving and they are in a 75 gallon temporarily until my new fish room is built. My largest...

Yep. Synodontis eupterus. The white marks are just the result of the HLLE. A healthy fish would not have them.

I have been keeping them for awhile now. Another member of the club has been breeding them and I first had his fry and now I have his breeders. Not much different in care than any other cory. Sand bottom, feed flakes, blackworms, other sinking foods. I haven't had any luck spawning them which is the...

I bred mine in very soft RO water. That may be the problem. I never really check pH but when I do it is often on the alkaline side even with the soft water.

Foreigners are not allowed to possess fish. Brazilians are. They need to go through a formal exporting process that is regulated by the Brazilian government.

I also let my plecos remove the bark. I generally let it dry inside the garage for a month or two and then just screw some slate to the bottom and put it in the tank. Haven't had any issues. I used a dogwood that we cut down in front of my house a few years ago and an ash tree that my neighbor cut d...

H. contradens is widely bred by hobbyists. I have done it myself a couple of years ago. It's not difficult. Just not reported I guess. There is a picture of fry from a breeding on the species page. Another species that is very similar is L201. They are very similar to H. contradens and may even be e...

Re: What species of Loricariidae have been breed in captivity successfully?
I agree with Eric that Ancistrus are going to be your best bet to get an idea of what it takes to breed loricarids and they are fairly easy to sell. Some Panaqolus are also fairly easy to breed. But I should point out that it is 1.5-2 years until they are mature. They are a sellable size in 6-8 mont...

Re: What species of Loricariidae have been breed in captivity successfully?
In terms of species with white spots and black bodies, I think all the varieties you named have been spawned in captivity. However, Most loricarids have small broods and take a long time to grow to market size. This makes them not really commercially viable for aquaculture. Which is why most you see...

Re: Neat things to see in tanks & Diet matters
I don't record feedings but I fed Repashy right after I got them at Cataclysm in October 2015. In spring of 2016 I picked up a bunch of frozen bloodworms and started feeding that more often which got a much greater response. My thoughts are the scent is very important and bloodworms are much more po...

Re: Neat things to see in tanks & Diet matters
My L46 zebras wouldn't eat Repashy Spawn N grow or Omnivore until I started mixing in some FD bloodworms. Now they eat it but not as enthusiastically as other fish I feed it to. They would much rather eat blackworms or frozen bloodworms it seems. I have some Grub Pie to try but so far haven't mixed ...
