Re: Pseudohemiodon in Ecuador
Hi,
it looks very much like what we used to call sp. "Tigre" or "Tiger" so far, the mentioned distribution also matches this species.
It is not common in the hobby, but now and then there are exports.

Re: Pleco type ID by mouth?
Hi, there is no official key to identify a species by looking on a mouth/oral disk. It's all about experience, one day you will have that kind of a feeling that "a mouth" should belong to "a species" or at least a genus. The genus is easy, but the species requires hundreds of hun...

Re: Hypostomus velhomonge, new species... is it L078?
Hi, I think L 78 is the fish mentioned as H. aff. pusarum (fig.10) in the paper. The eye size of H. aff. pusarum matches L 78 better than H. velhomonge does. Plus, in DATZ Rainer mentioned the elongated caudal lobes, which are also present in the specimen of H. aff. pusarum. Obviously they might be ...

Hi,
you got a man made form of P. pardalis, as you already found out. It's sometimes called "chocolate pleco" too.

Hi,
I am not aware of an actually happened crossbred yet, but yes, it can happen.
Do you have lateral pictures? L 7 and L 240 tend to show a stress coloration very quickly, in a white bucket both might look just like the other one.

I'd say H. contradens too.
Furthermore I am pretty sure that L 201 and L 471 are representatives of the same species, and yours is none of these two.

Re: Marked as a "Angelicus" but I think is a "Bristlenose"
Hi, as you already suggested it is a female, yes. The name "Angelicus pleco" is used more often for this fish than one might assume, it has some spots, so why not call it "Angelicus"? Same name is applied to P. albomaculatus, H. contradens, L 107, L 181 etc. I guess it is because...

Re: Mini ranger pleco?
The "minis" are nothing but P. punctatus, if you are lucky you end up with a P. weberi. The exporters might either name them like this to sell them better, or maybe just get fooled by the juvenile pattern themselves, leading them to think they are a different species, because they look so ...

Re: Peckoltia wild caught. L205 or P. brevis?
Agree on L 205, I don't see why we remain so focused on the separation of L 205 and P. brevis though. L 205 is cf. brevis in my opinion and will be brevis if it should ever be looked at more detailed. I'm not referring to this post only, but in general there is a lot of discussion about these two, w...

Re: A visit to the store
Hi, it is none of the known debilittera-types and doesn't belong to this group. It can't be H. sp. "Guaviare" either, the eye is too large, the head to high. I think it is likely a hybrid of a wormlined Hypancisrus from Xingu (I guess L 66) and one of the H. margaritatus-complex (L 136 e.g.)

Hi,
Eric is right, you've got a nice specimen of L 206, plus I think it is a male.
Colour variations can occur due to the colours of the surrounding, like in your case a dark substrate makes the fish go darker too.

cheers

Hi
I don't see why this should not be considered a common Ancistrus sp. (cf. or aff. cirrhosus). There is nothing I can spot on the photos which would lead me towards another ID.

Hi
Hypancistrus are not as willing to feed on snails as Pseudacanthicus and Scobinancistrus are, but occasionally you will see an individual feeding on a snail. Smashed snails though are very welcome as fresh food.

Hi, I agree with Eric concerning the Ancistrus. The first Hypancistrus (assumed L 181) is Hypancistrus margaritatus (L 404). The second one (assumed L 103) is a Hypancistrus from the Xingu River, possibly L 333. The two last ones reminded me of the first presentation of L 399 and L 400, which were s...

Hi,
a lighter base colour is not that uncommon in freshly collected specimens, but does normally not appear among the thousands of juveniles that are exported. Do you have a picture of the specimen in question? The base colour can vary from white, to grey, cream and brownish.

Hi, I am not aware of any study about population density of this fish or the forms/species known as L 128, L 200a, L 200b and L 476. Hi, based on the second picture I put my money on Ancistomus wernekei, it is quite a good match. L 278 is a typical Peckoltia and more bulky than your specimen. L 210 does look very similar, but it is is more than unlikely that you will get a fish from Rondonia without knowing what it is or at least...

Re: Thoughts on keeping breeding groups of different genera together
Morning As long as you provide enough shelter and hiding places you will be fine with two or even three species in the same tank. The Rineloricaria need different caves to spawn in than the Hypancistrus/Peckoltia/Panaqolus and won't compete with them anyway. Try to get species from a similar habitat...
