Re: New cat ?

Haven't been in this neighborhood off www for years now. ... and this thread is already very old. Anyhow. Here's the paper I was referring to when it comes to the position of the barbels. Systematic review of the neotropical shovelnose catfish genus Sorubim Cuvier (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) MICHAEL...

Re: Sorubim lima Distribution

S elongatus are very often sold as lima. Meaning that you can end up with elongatus. Elongatus stays smaller. According to this paper... http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2007f/zt01422p029.pdf ...they (lima) seem to have been found in the lower parts of Rio Tapajos. Elongatus in the neighbourhood as we...

Re: Lima is very shy

As mentioned before and also my experience. Sorubims thrive much better when being in groups. They don't really enjoy tankmates but can go well with calmer species of Plecos Mine (S elongatus) have been even more relaxed when joined by schools of tetras. The idea is that they might use the tetras as...

Re: So do I have a true Sorubim Lima??

I don't know any other word than gular. But you're right in your guessing. Its the "area" in between left and right lower jaw bones. The detail to check out is if the barbels are mainly fore or aft of the tip of the V. At least that's how I've understood it. I might be wrong also. Counting...

Re: So do I have a true Sorubim Lima??

I'd also add that elongatus seems to have a genrerally more slender body than lima but this is more of a subtile feeling rather than something to rely on. :)

Re: So do I have a true Sorubim Lima??

Well your quesstion made me open up this case once more. It seems like one of the "easiest" visual keys would be two pairs of mental barbels. Lima has them equal and/or forward of the "pointy tip" at the gular and elongatus has them equal or posterior tho that same point. At leas...

This is the biggest tank ill have any time soon. Maybe it would be best to leave them out then. Same but i dont want it to be unconformable in my tank. Cheers  If that's the case I think your decission is wise. I'm sure they would do fine for some years in the tank you have now but we all...

Cheers. Ill give the banjo a go then when there smaller. What do you think would be best to do for my tank? Would a group fit in there? Thanks They most certainly thrive better in groups. They are a bit calmer and not as nervous as they might be otherwise. Not being overly nervous and stressed is o...

Re: Please ID my catfish

Pattern on the head and pectoral fin spine doesn't seem to fit with ambrosetti. Rather more like a Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus but that's not either likely locationwise is it? Or a very bleak Pterygoplichthys pardalis like on the following picture. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?sp...

Soft background

8 months ago I tried an slightly controversial aquarium background idea - using a mattress. Don't know if it has been tested elsewhere but I got it (not personally though) from a more or less legendary Swedish aquarium profile - Sune Holm - who himself has shaped and prepared rubber-foam mattresses ...

Re: Potatoes as main diet?

Well this topic made me sink a potatoe for the first time ever into the tank. It was one half of a smaller potatoe and about half the body size of my Panaque nigrolineatus = a little bigger than the head of the Panaque. It was placed there in the evening and in the morning it was barely touched. So ...

Re: need id and sexing and info on tank set up and all pic's

Like rabbits indeed - paleatus at least. Mine where extra productive after bigger water changes when the new water was a slightly colder than the water it replaced. I only occationally had them in separate breeding tanks but they managed to get offspring who survived into adults even in the "no...

Re: Catfish sting?

While moving my fishes to a new tank a Sorubim managed to escape from the net and landed on the floor. I quickly grabbed it (before one of my dogs) and got stung by one of the pectoral fins. The pain was very much similar to a wasp sting.

Re: walking catfish

Don't know if it's an alternative to a Clarias or even a possible option but Heteropneustes might be interesting to check out. It seems to grow to about 50 cm and that would certainly outrule it for any other tanks but huge ones. I bought one sometime in the 90's and had it for about 10 years before...

Re: members currently keeping sorubim lima

The first ones reacting to water quality going bad in my tanks has always been the Sorubims. And, as Mats points out, it's quite common that they (or pimelodids) don't eat then - at least that's my experience. But I've also noticed that they can have periods when not eating and without me finding a ...

I'd say that's a hybrid but with the Cat-elog out of work at the moment I don't dare to say for sure.
Probably half tiger shovelnose but what it has else in it I don't know. The body shape and the pattern however might indicate a mix with some of the really huge ones.

If you are into "heavy duty fish technicals", this is for you, and explains pretty well how the jaw and teeth work in a pl*co. Nathan Lujan's PhD dissertation: http://etd.auburn.edu/etd/bitstream/handle/10415/1710/Dissertation.pdf . Of course, just looking at the pictuers will show the ja...

Re: are plecos jawless fish????

Pleco jaws are in fact even more complex than the typical jaw system, and definitely more complex than the related catfishes such as callichthyids and trichomycterids. This is seen in many species that need to eat encrusting things, such as in the angelfishes, butterflyfishes, and tangs. By no mean...

Re: Are my tiger shovelnose catfish actully tiger shovelnoses??

Hello all. A few months ago I bought what the local fish store called a tiger shovelnose for 35 dollars. It was 3'' then and its 7'' now. It is brown with spots instead of stripes and it is dark. The spots go from the fins to the tail and as long as the sides of the body. It does sort of have a sho...

Re: are plecos jawless fish????

Jaws yes - but while evolving the suckermouth they have kind of lost most or all of the, what we would consider "traditional" gaping jaw function. That makes them supeficially lamprey lookalikes in the mouth region. They also remind of the Ordovician and Devonian Ostracoderms which where j...

Re: Help with my tiger shovelnose!!!

Have you checked PH, KH and such things? Could the tap water in your area contain something unhealthy? And of course it also depends on how much you've fed it. New tanks can be sensitive to such things due to unestablished bacterial cultures - those who deal with waste products. Not sure how similar...
