Panaque with excessive fin

I've had my Panaque cf_armbrusteri`tocantins` for about 4/5 years who is now about 18cm/7", and every so often has gone through a phase of growing excess soft fin rays and membrane on it's dorsal and caudal fin. The amount on the caudal fin has started to reduce, but the extra on the dorsal fin...

Re: Who has the biggest Panaque Picture thread

Hi Haakon. Where should I look if I want to buy 2 small blue eyed panaques, they look Awesome Both of the two 'blue eye' species, Panaque cochliodon and Panaque suttonorum , are rarely, if ever seen at that size (5-10cm). I've seen a couple of photos of ones quoted at 10cm-12cm, and the smallest I'...

The eyes (I would call them orange in colour) and the brighter body colour, yes, but not a continuous line. The lines on both these fish are very variable.

Re: Please ID my Panaque

It's a Panaque nigrolineatus . The way you're holding it is quite risky. If it were to flail, it'll either fall to floor and break something or you'll clamp with your hand and break something. A better method would be to support it's body with your palm and fingers and to press on its head with your...

I agree with Rob, looks more like Panaque sp(l191) . If it were Panaque titan , at that size (looks to be between 10-15cm?) I'd expect to see brighter, more orange coloured eyes. Re: Cochliodon or suttoni?

Are we agreed that in laymans terms, in Panaque suttonorum , the distance from the eye to the tip of the snout is shorter than in Panaque cochliodon ? In general, I agree with this. But having just browsed through the revision, in table 3, the snout length is recorded and only differs, on average, ...

Re: Cochliodon or suttoni?

I look for 3 things between the two species (the second two are more subjective). 1. Snout/head profile - Panaque suttonorum has a shorter snout and more rounded, dome like, head shape. Panaque cochliodon has a more elongated snout and has supraoccipital hump, tending towards a more 'angular' head. ...

Re: Some of my panaque's

The two larger ones seem to differ a lot already in pattern, do they tend to lose their pattern/stripes as they get larger? Can you tell the difference between these and L191?

Is the long term plan to keep them together and see if they'll breed?

Nice tank, Rob, great dimensions. What will you use in the filter compartment? Several types/layers of media or a HMF style sponge?

Do you have the L418 yet?

Does the "xingu", "tocantins" and "teles pires" variety share the same dental pattern and number of teeth? Leaving araguaia on it's own having a pattern more similar to P. Nigro? I believe they do. Have a look at these comparisons I made about the river varieties, alth...

Re: L027 Xingu ??

Something that's bugged me, since more and more Panaque cf. armbrusteri have become available recently, is that I find it harder to stick with the 4 prescribed river varieties we're used to. 5 river varieties is correct, Tapajos, Teles Pires, Xingu, Tocantins and upper Araguaia is 5 different "...

Re: L027 Xingu ??

The three of yours, Rob, definitely look like Xingus. But I'm unsure of the Amazon Aquatics one. It could just be the angle of the picture but the head looks quite rounded and dome shape, whereas a Xingu head shape at that size (I'm guessing about 20cm+) would be more elongated and have a more prono...

Re: Royal L27c Tocantins.. any owners out there?

According to the Cat-eLog there are 4 keepers of Panaque cf_armbrusteri`tocantins` . I've had mine for a few years now, and is about 18cm/7" TL. I don't know of any reason to treat them differently from Panaque cf_armbrusteri`xingu` , I've always kept mine with a group of these and other Panaqu...

Eyal8a - Do you test the water parameters? It's just that I would of thought 40% WC per week isn't enough to keep the water ok.
