Re: Planiloricaria cryptodon problems

Quick update - I am now 11 days post start of treatment/solitary for this cryptodon and everything is looking up. I treated with 3 doses of Kanaplex, which lasted 6 days. At the 6 day mark the fish still looked worrying, however, there was a little improvement. The fish is in a 30 breeder with some ...

Re: Planiloricaria cryptodon problems

Andy has definitely brought up some good points. My tank footprint is 72 x 30 where I housed these 2 cryptodon in a community setup as originally posted, and with a little bit of scaping in the tank taking up some floorspace I have found this to be a minimum for the fish to be able to maneuver easil...

Re: Planiloricaria cryptodon problems

I agree that the fish has probably been stressed and as such, yes, I have the fish in solitary right now. Just to clarify, there have not been successive treatments - at this point the fish is in day 3 of being treated with Kanamycin, as I felt the issue may have progressed with a bacterial componen...

Re: Planiloricaria cryptodon problems

Well I pulled the cryptodon and it wasn't real happy to say the least. Immediately rolled over on it's back in the net and didn't even fight - I used a fairly large net - a Python 10" x 8" about 5" deep so there was room in there - I guess he wanted me to think he was done. Transferre...

Re: Sad day in the fish room

Sorry to hear about the loss. Easy to say and I've been there but try and not beat yourself up over it - accidents happen even to the most experienced people in all hobbies - we get caught up in every day life and let something slip we wouldn't otherwise.

Re: Planiloricaria cryptodon problems

Thanks for the comments. I do hope it isn't velvet as that is some serious stuff to remedy. Isnt velvet more of a yellowish/copper looking condition? does the white color of this skin issue rule velvet out?? So at this point possibly a bacterial/fungal issue or possibly velvet or some other parasite...

Planiloricaria cryptodon problems

I have been watching my planiloricari progressively worsen over the last several days with what seems to be a fungal/bacterial skin?? issue and would like to ask for some advice. First off tank parameters - 6 foot 250 gallon tank, sand substrate, 2 planiloricaria ~ 25cm , 5 geophagus, 2 crenicichla ...

Re: West Africa (162x124x080)

I'll do my best to get some pics when I get back at the end of the week - business trip. The tank is 183 x 76 x 70 (72" x 30" x 27" high) - houses 3 heterochromis multidens, 3 coptodon guineensis, 4 pelmatochromis buetikofferi, 6 bryconaethiops microstoma and the 6 syno flavitaeniata ...

Re: West Africa (162x124x080)

Beautiful setup. Congrats on a great aquascaping job and a great selection of fish. I did a similar thing about 1 year ago (switch from tang to congo and WA) and it was nice to get a change up. I used to have a group of decorus and loved them - they are a little shy but yours seemed to be out and ab...

Hydor in-line heater and human error

I have in-line Hydors on all my tanks and have been running them for 3-4 years with absolutely no issues - love them and highly recommend them. They function well by keeping steady temps and keep clutter out of the tank. So this morning I was doing a filter cleaning on one of my tanks - a little bit...

It's always tough when this happens and I can appreciate what you are going through. Prize fish, you're pumped and bad luck happens. I had the same thing occur last year with some other synos and remember it all too well. Good luck with your remaining fish - you've been patient finding them I am sur...

Re: Synodontis clarias

Jippo, I think the word you are looking for is "dither fish" - which most English mother-tongue speakers will understand. I have observed the same with several of my synos - multis especially in one tank - I have 6 adults in with 3 polli and and granny, housed in a 150 - lots of cover and ...

Re: Synodontis granulosa question

You'd be hard pressed to just find one on a list somewhere, out of the blue. You have to be watching lists pretty closely because they would move pretty quickly. Your best bet like for many of the rarer type fish is work with an importer you can trust and have possibly done business with before and ...

Tough to find here in Canada and the US, but they do come up from time to time. I have several (4) I picked up from Atlantis and have also seen them available a couple of times from Old World - and then there are the private sales. Typically in the $250 range. Beautiful fish. My experience in the co...

Re: New fish - to be or not to be??

Birger, thanks for the comments - I am leaning towards the granny in the 125 and the new arrivals in the 75 for about 3-4 weeks. I guess I'll have to keep my eye on the granny and the 125 - would you agree that I leave the 125 decor as is and add the granny and its quarters - it'll be sitting up aro...

Re: New fish - to be or not to be??

I am pretty comfortable with the way the fish are housed right now, interaction seems pretty normal with the exception of the little aggression I described in the 125 between the 2 pardalis - but there have been no injuries. So yes, I am trying to find the best way to QT the pardalis given what I ha...

New fish - to be or not to be??

I'm looking for any thoughts/advice you may have with a conundrum I am facing and one that we have all faced - more fish, not enough room. Re: My latest acquisition: Syno brichardi(?)

I have to agree on the positive comments on the brichardi. I have had a group of 3 for only a couple of months and they are VERY active - amongst the most active of the syno groups I have - up there with my multis. I have mine in a temporary small holding tank - 40 breeder (36*18 footprint) with lot...

Birger, comment well taken about keeping the peace. I was considering putting my steatocranus irvinei in with 3 decorus and 2 pardalis in a 125G (72*18 footprint) and your comments solidified my potential concern. I am going to try a group of congo tetras instead.

I would also agree luci - spot size, irregularity, etc and in the last pic of the male, the white triangle within the black on the anal fin is more representative of the luci than the all black triangular markings on the fins of the petricola.

Re: S. pardalis pic

Dave, I was speaking with Dave @ DRAF last week and suspected that if you didn't get them at Toyins they would have come from DRAF. This "yellow coloring" that you picked out, was the fish substantially smaller than the others - could the larger fish begin to lose the yellow? You said your...

Very nice specimen. I was looking at Mark's previous post on pardalis and jippos comments about coloring and different populations - i.e the whitish background versus the yellowish background. When you say full grown, do they get to 18-20 cm - or 7-8" in captivity. Yeah, so pretty much the same footprint as my 75 - how long have you had them. And what other synos?
I am really excited about the prospect of a group of 8-10 of these guys - must look great !!

Mats, Would 8-10 be a good group size in that footprint? Is your thinking then that if you had a larger group they'd be out more - more gregarious like multis? As for the smaller specimens, that's what I felt - tank raised - now I don't really have a huge issue with that (as long as the seller isn't...

Syno flavitaeniatus

I am considering a group of these fish and have read some of the previous threads - thought I would ask some specific questions of the keepers: After having kept these for a while, what would you consider as a good group size - if indeed group is the way to go. What size tank would a grouping need. ...
