Re: Which upside down Syno?
They are pretty young. The photos shorten the body a bit and now you mention it, they seem a bit shorter than my last ones. I got those as adults, tho, so don't know their developmental stages.

Re: Which upside down Syno?
Sorry, thought I did. She said 8 mo to a year, mere toddlers. The tank is a temporary 20 US gal. holding tank, so without tail maybe 3 inches? One is substantually larger than the other. Wish I could post the vid, they look very much like eupterus in motion. I'll wait for one more opinion, but if we...

Re: Which upside down Syno?
Thanks. The more I look, the more I think young eupterus, but maybe not quite? I don't know where the gal who gave them to me got them but she thought they would be small fish and just needed to give them away, right away.

Which upside down Syno?
I picked these up today as "need gone. Now!" rescues. They were ID'd as Lace Catfish, S. nigrita, 8 months to a year old. Their dorsal fins seem better developed and lacier than the dorsals in the pics of S. nigrita I see. Not a species I know personally. They do swim upside down at the to...

Re: Fewer water changes=friendlier fish
What I would be interested in is - would it be better to change 10 % a day, or 50 % a week. Unfortunately, this is not tried to be ansewered. You won't get the same result in chemical concentration because the amount of chemicals/ contaminants will be higher in a 50 percent change than respectively...

looks around, yup, this is the place
I had occasion to check Planet Catfish and decided to update my My Cats list to include species I used to keep. Long story short, I am down to one tank--S. decorus and a small plec--and haven't been around for years. Good to see so many old associates still here and information continuing to evolve....

Re: RO Reality nuts and bolts of getting started
We are rural and some areas have contaminated water, other areas have to drill 1000 ft or more to reach the water table, so water hauling and storing are common. Our systems aren't old (we're a frontier area, wild west well into the 20th century) but poorly planned and constructed. Fortunately one t...

Re: RO Reality nuts and bolts of getting started
Thanks folks. Mats, it looks like the cistern you linked to is a UK product, but I suspect here in water Hell storage tanks are pretty easy to come by. Do you just run the RO into the storage tank? It sounds a bit easier than storing buckets around. Water pressure here is incredibly good year round,...

Re: My disaster to report
What finally worked for us was using the QuickCure 2/3rds full strength, but using it twice a day. Before that cure, the ICK seemed to regroup near the end of every 24 hour application, then another fish or 2 would have it. I have had resistant strains on Loriis and found twice a day with Rid Ich P...

RO Reality nuts and bolts of getting started
I am in a situation where I should really go to RO water but I have no idea what I would be getting into with my own unit. We use RO from the store for cooking, drinking, washing hair and so forth so I am looking to set up a system to accommodate those needs as well as water changes for five aquaria...

Thanks to all who provided help! I went ahead and ordered a media canister, as it sounds like that is the only way to go. Thanks again! It is good to have. Have you heard if the condition is reversible? When I get the quality issue straightened out, will the tissue straighten out? Aside from this, the fish are fine and entertaining.MatsP wrote:

Re: Regeneration in S. decorus
The two rescues from two years ago are still around and fully regenerated quickly. They are not growing as fast as my previous decora, but they aren't changed as often and don't have as big a tank. The gill covers on both are turned back a bit. I have heard water quality can cause this. Does anyone ...

(I didn't take a photo in the bag, and now I only see them by peeking behind the plants when it's dark in the tank - hopefully they DO come out at some point in the future... Hoover the Blue-eyed Panaque cochliodon RIP
For those who are fans of Susan Aufieri's "pet" Hoover, the Blue-eyed: Hoover succumbed to a cold snap in the U.S. Northeast when an ice storm wiped out electricity in the area for days, leaving the house temperature at 42 degrees and tank heaters useless. Many other fish in the Aufieri co...

consider going to natural light or natural light cycles if you have to use artificial. I swear I saw breeding behavior in my decorus, when on fish kept another in a cave wiht him (or her).
