Re: Do I have 1 males and 2 female Corydoras gossei
I have 50+ gossei about 4 months old, starting to look like they are big enough to be sold but of course it probably will be another 6 months until they will think about breeding. The ventral fins on the Gossei make it fairly easy to distinguish gender, but at this age its difficult to be 100% accur...

Re: Pim eat corys?
Yep, and if they are sterbai, they will also release poison into the mouth making sure they both die if they haven't arleady. (Some corydoras release poison when threatened). Wikipedia suggests they eat anything they can fit in their mouth.

Re: 1st post, can you help me create the perfect tank for corys?
This is a tough situation! I would not move the cories into the hospital tank, it will become a poisonous ammonia pool. If you think you can delay a bit longer do this: 1) Run the filter for the new tank on the old tank (so the old tank has two filters running at once) 2) Leave it on this tank for a...

Re: Do cory's eat algae?
This sort of behavior is normal behavior for corydoras. When the water quality is excellent, they will sometimes do that. Most of my cories will do this all day every day, for days in a row sometimes. Especially when there is a large group (ie more than 6) however my trilineatus do this and there ar...

Re: tank height limit
I have read several articles where the author states that the fry have to be able to get to the surface to fill their "swim bladder" or they don't survive. That would imply if fry couldn't reach the surface they would be in trouble. But of course we all believe what we read on the internet...

Re: Corydoras gossei
Did you work it out? I hope you can get them to breed, as they are great fish! I have 8 of them myself.
If we both have offspring, could we do a trade of the offspring to prevent inbreeding. Would love to breed some high quality second generation tank bred gossei.

Re: tank height limit
Yea, when i first bought cories, I had this EXACT SAME concern. Read some warnings online about tank depth and I stressed for weeks. I can say now from experience, they dont seem to care what depth the tank is. If it is higher than 2ft, maybe a platform or log half way up is helpful for them to rest...

Re: Finally found some C. Panda in my area!
The first time I ended up with 16 corydoras in one tank, their behaviour was amazing! Even now as I write they are swimming up and down the tank at full speed in a full group of 16! I now never keep less than 8 in a group, unless it is a particularly rare species that you can only find a few at a ti...

Re: Beef heart for cories
Who thought, "I wonder if I go down to the shops and buy some heart and feed it to my fish if they would like it" Why feed heart to fish at all, why not other body parts? why not steak? I assume it was some clever person with excess heart in their meat factory that discovered marketing it ...

Guilders whiting (calcium carbonate)
Has anyone used guilders whiting (from a pottery supply store) to increase Kh. I am testing it in a fishless tank, and it is doing wonders for increasing my kh without doing much else. Not sure if I am brave enough to drop some cories in yet! I tried the Chemist in Australia for a pure form and they...

Re: Corydoras Pygmaeus Sensitivity
I am using the API test kit, not that old, so i assume it is fairly accurate. It is an interesting point about where the source of the fish are. I had wondered if being wild caught would make them more susceptible to death... Not a single shop here in Melbourne is ever able to answer the question of...

Re: Corydoras Pygmaeus Sensitivity
My tap water doesn't have nitrates that i can detect anyway. Is it that common?
Im glad to know that I am not the only one. I am going to pick up some more, and am going to have to dedicate a lot of extra TLC to get them through the transition!

Re: Corydoras Pygmaeus Sensitivity
Yea, i was resorted to a few large water changes after the first few died, so not surprised there were no nitrates. The ammonia was probably just detectable because there had been some dead fish in the water.

Corydoras Pygmaeus Sensitivity
Has anyone here experienced very sensitive pygmaeus? I have very sadly had two batches from two different shops in melbourne. The tanks they were in had pretty good water parameters 0.1/0/0 Ammonia/Nitrite/Niterate (There was only a slight trace of ammonia, almost undetectable). I am beginning to th...

Re: snail eaters
I have never actually seen them eat snails personally. I have had a similar experience to you, i had a bunch of snail shells appear on the bottom of the tank over a few days to a week. I wondered if it was somethign to do with water quality or smail food source more than anything else.

If you want to know look at the shape of the ventral/pelvic fins, ie as discussed in the "Sexing corydoras thread"
If you dont know which fins these are, check out this picture:

If you have to use seachems test kits for nitrites and nitrates with prime, doesn't that imply that the seachem test kits are testing for a different chemical than the other test kits?

Re: Seachem Prime problems?
Thanks for all your feedback, the ammonia problem is not the tap water. My main problem was that the nitrites and nitrates are not showing up on any tests at all! I have since stopped using prime on most of my tanks my nitrites and then nitrates started building up again like normal. Interestingly, ...

Re: Corydoras gossei
There are none that are obviously female. Feed them well for the next few months, plenty of live food and so on, and the female shape should become much more obvious. Second option if you are more impation, study the shape of the fins underneath. Girls have paddle fins, guys have pointy fins, but th...

Disinfecting nets and other implements
I have recently had some sick fish in one of my tanks which makes me wonder what what to do to make sure disease doesn't spread? I notice shops use some coloured liquid in a tub to soak their nets in, what is this stuff? I know some people will say bleach but I have yet to see evidence that decholri...
